My niece is having her First Holy Communion next month and I need something to wear.

Would either of these two dresses do?

You’ll see the one with sleeves has some small cut outs at the side. I’d much rather it didn’t, but I like the dress overall apart from that. Is that too much for a church setting, or could I get away with it, do you think?

is it better to go with the black? I feel I have broad shoulders and so might not be able to take the puff sleeves anyway.

I’m 43, 5ft 2, and size 10 for info.

Thanks.

In all honesty OP I think for dresses you could do a lot better. Both are frumpy IMHO. I know you didn’t ask for opinions but I think there are better dresses out there.

nonmerci99 · 31/03/2025 19:36

I love both, but I’d say right for church with a cardigan or light jacket over. Not frumpy at all.

Ddakji · 31/03/2025 19:38

I don’t like either but I would err towards sleeves in a Catholic Church, though I don’t know how strict they are about that nowadays.

KnickerlessParsons · 31/03/2025 19:40

I like both too, but I think both of them are too “summer holiday” for a holy communion.

I go to mass regularly, and I have seen some saucier outfits. One memorable look was an off the shoulder top and tight pleather pants. 😂 I don’t think it’s nearly as strict as it was — most people dress very casually at my church.

Sorry OP don’t like either. Definitely no re the slits one and church.
the dark one would be fine with a jacket or cardi but it’s a little drab IMO.

Onlyonekenobe · 31/03/2025 19:46

I think you could wear either with a cardigan or jacket. For a child’s event, maybe the brighter one (which could also double as a nice summer dress - the black one is a bit meh)

I was thinking how wedding dresses often show much more skin.

Thanks for the replies.

@BritpopbabyI would consider the first one, but I don’t love that particular shade of green.

I'm not sure how formal a first communion is compared to a christening but when I went to DGS christening people were wearing everything from jeans to posh dresses.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 31/03/2025 23:59

I think what it’s important is that you choose a dress you like enough to want to wear afterwards. Either of those dresses would be appropriate with a cardigan or jacket over the top. I think the colours in the first one are nicer for a spring event but you will need to try it to see what you think of the puff sleeves, and whether they will work with a cardigan/jacket over.

borntobequiet · 01/04/2025 08:36

Just wear normal nice going to church clothes that are warm enough.

If I was just going to church on a normal Sunday (which I no longer do), I’d likely be wearing jeans and top.

That’s not a look I’d ever wear to a Holy Communion, or any other formal church event.

Of the two, I prefer the black one personally.
I haven’t seen first communion mums (or aunties) wear dresses with cut-outs before, and I don’t like the puff sleeves in the first one.

LizzieEsp · 01/04/2025 12:25

I wouldn't worry about the cut-outs. It's a lovely dress! xx
