Lips like wrinkled prunes

Hello, I'm nearly 50 and have never really worn lipstick. My bare lips don't look particularly old or wrinkled

I recently had a style make-over, got advice about colours, clothes, make-up etc and one of the things the stylist recommended was to wear lipstick. She put a couple on me and, as much as I loved the colour and the difference it made to my look, the lipstick seemed to make my lips look really wrinkled and prune-like.

I don't want to spend loads of money trying different brands etc, if nothing will make a difference. I appreciate I'm not 20 any more and don't expect perfect smoothness, but is there anything I can do to improve the look of my lips when wearing lipstick? Any good tips on applying it or recommendations of brands?

Thank you!

Lipstick would do that to me too. So I wear Burt's Bees tinted balm instead.

I never leave the house without lipstick and am older than you by a long way.

You're only 49!!!

Look out for glossy balm types - there are zillions out there, from LOreal Glow (around £10) to Dior and Chanel( £30+)

Boots No 7 has some that look like a fat crayon, in subtle shades.

Or you could try a neutral shade of lip liner and fill in with lip gloss.

I think a satin, or gloss one would work better.
My lips disappear with a matte nude, so to my surprise I find a brighter satin shade looks ok on me.Im 60, with pale skin.
Mac “ Maraschino much” is my current favourite.

Well that's it, I see loads of beautiful older women wearing lovely bright lipsticks and I never notice whether their lips are shrivelled or not. I don't know if my lips are old before their time or if I just need the right techniques and products. Perhaps I'm just not used to seeing colour on my lips so I'm focusing on them too deeply.

Thank you for the recommendations, I will visit the beauty counters and give them a try!

I tried for years looking for a suitable nude but they all made me look ghostly, until a friend thought a bright shade would look nice
Clinique Punch Pop is nice too
