For Glyndebourne

Is this dress ok for Glyndebourne in the summer. I don't want a super long dress as it may trail in the grass.

PS i am a lot shorter than the model wearing the dress. So it will be longer on me.

‘Ok’ is probably the best one could say of it … A bit perfunctory and uncertain of itself. I’d buy a dress you adore and have the length altered to suit you. Though there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with a garment trailing across grass. Awkward on the Tube maybe. Equally you could choose something shorter if that’s what you prefer. But where’s the satisfaction in wearing The World’s Blandest Dress?

Hoolihan · 28/03/2025 21:32

It's a bad dress. Shapeless, unflattering, blah.

Sunholidays · 28/03/2025 21:35

I think it’s lovely. Understated but chic, really like it. Where is it from OP? Please tell me it’s not polyester!

PlanetOtter · 28/03/2025 21:41

If it fits you better than the model, it’s fine.

Glyndeborne isn’t super glam. You need an outfit that lets you walk on grass, picnic extensively, then comfortably sit for hours. Wedges and generous waste-bands are useful!

Glyndebourne’s a lot more informal than it used to be so you can be as glamorous or casual as you want. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear something that makes you feel amazing. I can’t imagine anyone feeling their best self in that dress, but if it makes you feel a million dollars then fine.

TizerorFizz · 28/03/2025 23:15

@ThisUniqueDreamer A floral shirt dress always looks chic. The dress you have pictured doesn’t seem to fit the model so it’s not great. I’ve attached 2 from M&S (red and striped shirt dress) and 2 from Rixo. Rixo is the best for this type of dress.

I am sorry but it is not the normal style of outfit that you will see at Glyndebourne. It does look like a lovely casual summer or work dress. I used to go to Glyndebourne with a good friend who would dress in a similar style. It stood out. She didn't mind; we didn't mind. So if that is your style then go for it! But nearly all of the men will be in black tie / white dinner suits and their partners/friends will be matching in style. How is the rest of your party dressing?

ThisUniqueDreamer · 28/03/2025 23:26

Strange as I go every summer and i've not seen everybody in floor length, evening gowns

Sorry but if looks as if you would be channelling hyacinth bucket.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 28/03/2025 23:45

No, women don't all wear floor length gowns, but there is mostly an element of glamour in fabric, style or accessories. I've been a member for a long time. But if you go every summer and this is your normal style and are comfortable with it, then wear it, like my friend did. Your company will be the most important thing to your fellow attendees. Hope you have a good season.

They are pretty much perfect. And they're dressy up dresses which can be worn to lots of different events.

If you go every year why are you asking?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/03/2025 07:46

I have no idea what the place or event you’re referring to is, but I think the dress is a bit ordinary and veering towards drab. It’s the colour, as much as the style - it gives me arranging flowers in church vibes.

lyricalwindmills · 29/03/2025 08:13

I love that dress! Unsurprised to find it’s from Jigsaw as I generally love most things in there.

I would imagine the photo isn’t really doing it justice there. I’d say perfect for Glyndebourne, maybe with espadrilles or flatforms, and great jewellery.

Impossiblyme · 29/03/2025 08:20

It’s horrible, drab and frumpy. Don’t buy it unless that’s the image you’re going for. There are so many prettier dresses out there.

ThisUniqueDreamer · 29/03/2025 08:45

I'll be taking it back. Thanks to those who provided constructive criticism for the rest of you, there is no need to be so fucking rude.

@ThisUniqueDreamer Two wrongs don’t make a right.

My comment about the dress on the model (as we hadn’t seen it on you!) was that if they don’t style it well on a model, it’s difficult to see how it improves in real life. Hope you find something you like and if you liked the dress, keep it. At the Royal Opera House these days it’s not unusual to see jeans. I notice men (always men!) wearing them but they are there for the production, not the fashion. Lots of women arrive after work so aren’t glamorous. Anyone wearing evening clothes really stands out!

Also “black tie” for anyone interested does not require a long dress for women. It’s just indicating a bit more glam! The old notion of a cocktail dress is perfect. Could also be a mini dress, midi, long or trousers. Anything you like that’s a step up from daywear. I’m also a huge fan of palazzo pants in a swishy fabric and a good evening top. Not sequins for summer but a patterned silk works well.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 29/03/2025 09:11

The sleeves on the Jigsaw dress are terrible.

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle. You could wear those dresses now! 70 years ago and they still look great.

DaphneduM · 29/03/2025 13:18

Glad you've decided to send it back - you're absolutely worth a better dress than that one. The fabric is not good - personally I would always go for a silk dress for this type of event. If you were a good slip underneath it (very old fashioned I know, but gives a much better structure to the dress lol) you will be good to go. Have a look on Net-a-Porter, The Outnet, Me and Em, Harvey Nichols, Harrods, Selfridges, Luisa Via Roma etc to get an idea of what's around and then hunt out a cheaper version. Vinted can be your friend here. Likewise for wow accessories which also make a difference. Again get ideas from these upmarket websites which show the whole outfit.
