Halo of frizz

I’ve recently developed a kind of halo of frizz around my otherwise fairly smooth hair. I am 45 this year - is this a symptom of age? The texture of my hair overall is still the same, it’s just that I now have all these short flyaways around my crown that stick up.

Any ideas what the cause might be or what I can do about it? For context, I have never dyed my hair or used styling tools, but I do blow dry it around 3-4 times a week and it can take up to an hour to do because it’s so thick.

They are short because it’s new hair that’s growing. They must have just shed/snapped around the same time so are now growing in.

Yes, sometimes if you have had a flu or illness, you can lose quite a bit of hair at the same time, then as it comes back in, you will have plenty of new growth that is visibly shorter.

Wow, I never knew that. I did have Covid a few months ago. Fingers crossed then that it is only temporary.

Hi I had this as a result starting HRT. My hair would grow to two inches before snapping off. Bloods and thyroid all normal. For some people HRT improves hair but mine did the opposite. Just something to be aware of.

Perhaps ask for bloods at the gp to exclude others things but it could be covid as people havd said. . Good luck with it..

You can use a piece of dental floss to smooth it down a bit - the wax on the thread is really good at smoothing frizz.

It can be anything - illness, a period of poor diet, stress, post pregnancy hair loss, menopausal hair loss - that causes hair to fall out, followed by the natural regrowth, which leads to that halo effect.

It will last until that hair is long enough to lie flat

I've had this too for months. I had a bout of low iron which I am guessing was the cause. For me it had been obvious that I'd been losing a lot more hair than usual so it was just regrowth but it is SO annoying.

6 months later I still have it, at various lengths as hair loss is still a bit up and down.

Just flimsy, stick out hair everywhere. On top of totally flat and glossy hair just to make it as obvious as possible!!

Haha yes this sounds just the same, the rest of my hair is so normal! I’ve tried brushing the surface with a mist of hairspray but they just spring up again.

Dental floss is an interesting idea - unfortunately I use those harp things so will have to wait and get some floss to try with.

I am on HRT but started it a year ago (and changed type about 6-9 months ago) so would not think it was related. I really hope not because I bloody love HRT.
