Best shops on Oxford St for a 37yo?

I'm visiting London soon and will be doing a day on Oxford St shopping for a new wardrobe, as it's a rare opportunity for me to try things on before buying and get a new wardrobe together before going back to work.

I'm 37yo, 5'6, size 14-16 with a bit of a mum tum and big boobs (7 months PP and nursing). I like colour and prints, dresses, high waist stiff jeans, shirts, very light knitwear, natural fibres, large totes and flats. I like the idea of a waistcoat. I don't like fussy stuff, embellishments accessories, logos, slogans.

I usually hit up Primark, Zara, H&M, Uniqlo and M&S, but have been recently disappointed with the first three. Maybe I've aged out? And am after a bit better quality and happy to spend more on less, particularly items not dependent on fit as my body continues to change.

Any ideas much appreciated!

Arket? Same family as H&M but slightly more upmarket. ME+EM?

Mulledjuice · 24/03/2025 13:44

Honestly I would book a JL personal shopping appointment, it will get you coverage of several brands in one go.

You might also like Massimo Dutti? And &other Stories.

ANagsHead · 24/03/2025 17:22

Why on earth would anyone go to Oxford St - for anything?

Covent Garden is fun and has everything - including (if it hasn’t closed down Agnes B). Marylebone High St is generally more upmarket but so many lovely shops. Coal Drops Yard is gorgeous.

Shoreditch- bit too far out maybe. No idea about Kings Road, Sloane St, or Regent St as haven’t been there for years. I always wish I had more time to spend on Columbia Road.

KittleZee · 24/03/2025 18:09

I'd probably just do three shops on Oxford Street, Selfridges, John Lewis (for a personal shopping appointment, as recommended by PP), and M&S. Then I'd head down Regents Street- you'll find the shopping is much better. Cos, Massimo Dutti, Anthropologie, & Other Stories and Maje are some of my favourites (although the last one only if the sales are on!) I usually check out Hollister too, which is a bit young, but really great for jeans. Also H&M Home, which isn't clothing at all, but I can never resist going in there if I'm on Regents Street!

It's horrible now. You'd be better off in Westfield. There isn't anything worth travelling there for that's unique.

TJM123 · 24/03/2025 22:41

Agree that Oxford Street is rubbish these days. Carnaby and Regent St still ok. Start with the big M&S, big H&M on the corner with 4 floors, TK Maxx, Uniqlo, & Other Stories, Liberty for dreaming purposes, Uniqlo, Anthropologie, bA&sh. I love a mooch round Beyond Retro soho.

HotCrossBunplease · 24/03/2025 22:42

Go to Westfield White City instead.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 24/03/2025 23:33

Swerve and go to Westfield

TheOGCCL · 24/03/2025 23:59

I’m on Oxford Street most weeks. It’s not so bad but generally it can be frustrating shopping in person these days.

Maybe Mango and Reserved. I also think Stradivarius is worth a look. Arket is a good suggestion too.

Camdenish · 25/03/2025 00:05

Oxford Street is just depressing now. You could do Regent Street, but I wouldn’t bother.
I hate the Westfields but if you’ve got to do them then go to the Shepherds Bush one, Stratford is grim.
if it was me I’d go to Sloane Square station and walk down Kings Road-go to Peter Jones, it’s what John Lewis at Oxford Circus used to be.
But yes, Arket.

SoloSofa24 · 25/03/2025 00:28

Have you ever looked in Muji? It would tick some of your boxes for natural fibres, light knitwear, unfussy, no logos etc. Limited range but the Oxford Street branch is bigger than most. Muji, Uniqlo and John Lewis (for homeware) are about the only reasons I would go anywhere near Oxford Street these days.

Antiperspirant · 25/03/2025 04:45

Mango, Reserved, Zara. Maybe H&M

growinguptobreakingdown · 25/03/2025 07:27

I think around Oxford street is getting better.Get off at Oxford circus and you have Cos, Other Stories, Carnaby street, Libertys, John Lewis, Arket, Weekday, Monki, huge M&S, Selfridges. And you can walk to Covent garden via Carnaby via Soho.I prefer being outside to malls though.Plus I like to end my day at the huge Waterstones at Picadilly. Don't bother heading down the the side of Oxford street which goes towards Tottenham court road from Oxford circus though. It's still rubbish.
Edited for typos!

growinguptobreakingdown · 25/03/2025 07:28

Oh yes I second Muji!

Have you done this? I've always been curious

Massimo Dutti is a good shout I've seen their stuff before but forgot about it

It's where I always use to shop when I worked in Soho a decade ago and did well out of it, and near to where I will likely be meeting up with friends. My old stomping ground really. I also just much prefer a high st to a mall

Covent Garden and Regents St may now be more applicable to me now though. Always found Carnaby St had lots of shops with little to sell if that makes sense

Sadly I have never managed to look like anything other then a drab sack of potatoes in Muji or any other minimislt Japenses brand. I love the aesthetic though

I’m 36 & 10 months postpartum. I’ve just done a wardrobe overhaul before turning to work so I’ve bought the following:

Wide leg trousers (regular & drawstring) - Zara (you might also want to look at the Sloan trousers in Abercrombie)

Crew neck & polo T-shirts - Uniqlo (I liked the mini ones as they are cut a little shorter, perfect for high waisted trousers)

Chunky cardigans - H&M

V neck cashmere jumpers - Uniqlo (I got mine in the sale)
