Toner disaster

Please be kind…..I lost all my hair to chemo 3.5 years ago and it’s finally grown back albeit very thin on top (thanks menopause) but today i decided to treat myself and got my hair done. I have naturally strawberry blonde hair but it’s darker down the back than the front and so I just wanted to add a bit of lift at the front to make it a bit more even. I showed her pictures. The hairdresser listened very carefully and mixed up the colour and I’ll be honest, I absolutely hate it. It’s bright red (like comic relief red) not a natural ginger red. She said it’s a toner and it’ll calm down with washing but it’s so unnatural looking around my face and it’s not to the scalp so it looks like I have big roots and I’ve been sat crying for ages.

I’ve just had a shower and done about 15 washes with clarifying shampoo and cheap shampoo and it has faded a bit but it still looks awful. How can I get it off? Is there a product I could get next day off amazon and get rid of it?

I won’t be messaging the hairdresser, I just want to get rid of the colour

I was actually contemplating shaving it about 2 hours ago because the chemo look was better but I’ve climbed down from there now

There is (or certainly used to be) something called ‘Colour B4’ which shrinks the colour molecules so that they can be removed from the hair shaft. It won’t work on colours classed as ‘stains’ though.

Head & Shoulders original is also meant to be good at removing unwanted colours.

Get yourself a good clarifying shampoo apply on dry hair cover for 30 mins rinse with hot water ! And repeat a few times ! That’s all u can do tbh ! (Stylist here )
do not use colour remover on toner !

I've read some vitamin C tablets hack that you mix with shampoo and leave on the hair for 30 minutes. You could try that maybe

PeachBlossom1234 · 23/03/2025 14:51

I’ve used all my clarifying shampoo now, and I’ve used head and shoulders - I think I did about 8 shampoos using them today (on top of the 15 last night) and it’s a little bit lighter but still awful. I bought a colour remover but haven’t used it yet, should I not??

I would use the colour remover. I have done quite a few times. Wits a faff and read the instructions carefully but hopefully will take away the red xxx

I can’t help with the colour problem unfortunately, but did it take 3.5 years for your hair to grow back? I’ve just lost all mine from chemo and was hoping it would return this year ( sometime!)

I hope you get it sorted soon x

Londontown12 · 23/03/2025 15:55

I wouldn’t use a colour remover for a toner no ! Are u sure it was a toner they fade very fast ? I’m wondering if they have used a semi if it’s not all but washing away by now u should go back into salon and get it remedied x

C080889 · 23/03/2025 16:02

Ive used colour B4 and always really rate it.
Agree a toner should have faded. Sounds more like a semi to me.

It took 3.5 years to get back to the length it was before. I’ve been loving all the different lengths but happy now it’s back to being long again. It did take longer than i expected though, I wish I’d taken some hair regrowth supplements. Good luck though, you’ll be fine xx

Ok so I bit the bullet and messaged the hairdresser who said that I can go back in and she’ll “neutralise it for me and can lighten it as it won’t wash out completely” so I guess it’s not a toner then! I’ll go ahead and use the colour remover and see how it turns out.

Down the back it’s nice it’s just the front and the top it looks so unnatural and bluntly coloured. I wanted to enhance my natural colour but it’s just so bright

Ah I’m glad you are happy with your length. When I Iost mine the first time round, it was a good couple of years until it was an okay length to suit my face.

Good luck going forward ( hair and health) x

Londontown12 · 23/03/2025 18:58

No don’t use the remover let her fix it u will make it 10x times worse using that trust me on this x

PeachBlossom1234 · 23/03/2025 23:05

I used the remover and I’m happy to say that it worked a treat and I’m back to my original colour. Phew. Thanks so much everyone
