I habe accepted that I have now lost my dryer and ghds to my daughter but I feel I need something to help me style my hair - I am newrly 50 and have quite fine hair but it never looks very “done”. Does anyone have any good reccomendations for a good dryer/hair tool or straightener that are versatile and easy to use? Thanks so much

I'd get your GHDS's back off your DD. I've tried everything in the past but nothing compared to the smoothness and ease of use of GHDS's. My DM had some and I'd quickly run through the ends of my hair when I popped over. I treated myself and haven't looked back.
Also, try some root spray and use your fingers to lift and tousle the top first and then straighten the ends. It's my go to 'going out out' look.

I’ve got this type of hair op.

I recently bought this to wave it :
https://www.notino.co.uk/mermade/cutie-waver-22-mm-triple-barrel-curling-iron-for-hair/

(I didn’t get it from this website, this was the cheapest I could find it)

£51.75 on the mermade website
https://mermadehair.co.uk/products/pro-waver-black-25mm

other websites too if you Google

Anyway, with a heat protector & volumising powder & mousse, then hairspray, I find I can get waves to stay. It’s very easy to use. (I don’t find wands / tongs that easy on our hair)

I also got a Babyliss big hair thing (cheaply) and I’m glad I got that on the cheap as I find a hairdryer and styling brush much better!

Revlon volumiser. I tried my daughter’s and it was great. Ghds make my hair too flat. Whereas the revlon tool was amazing at making my hair look thicker.

My hair is very thin and fine. Less than a 1cm pony.

im a bit wary of oil as my hair is so thin

Babyliss big hair after quick blow dry. I have 2 Babyliss incase one breaks. I always use styling products for fine hair too. Currently using Aveda Phomollient.

It’s not oil, it’s texturising spray (infused with oil!)
My hair is also really thin and fine, so actual oil would just make it greasy. Whereas this gives it hold, texture and volume. I guess the ‘oil infusion’ just means it isn’t crispy!

Ohh ok. I’ll check it out.

Dyson Airstrait works great on my fine wavy hair. Less drying than straightening irons, hair is less flat, and style lasts all day.

I’ve been using this recently
https://uk.moroccanoil.com/products/dry-texture-spray

It’s very good for adding a bit of oomph / texture to fine / flat hair.

This is good but be very careful !
I’m a stylist I used it on my dry hair (currently growing out bleach )
And it made my already bad hair super super dry ! So I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone with damaged hair in need of moisture!

As for tools less heat is best for fine thin hair !

That’s a good tip, thanks @Londontown12
I haven’t noticed it drying out my hair yet - I don’t use it every day though. Only a couple of times a week I reckon.

Ginfa · 23/03/2025 19:33

Thanks - I never usually bother with styling mr hair but I feel it looks really listless all the time now it’s started to thin too #perimenipause

I’ve got flat, thin hair and got a sample of Colour Wow Bombshell, with a Babyliss Big hair and 3 squirts of the mousse I’ve managed to get really good volume.

ChangingHistory · 23/03/2025 20:32

I bought the ghd glide brush. Now I apply a volumiser at the roots, a serum at the ends and finger dry upside down then a few strokes of the brush through the top layers and the ends and its done without becoming flat.
