Badly damaged nails (photos)- please help!

I bought some cheap semi-cured adhesive nails from Amazon (never again), put them on and that night will up in agony and couldn't sleep so removed them at 3am. Could barely use my fingers the next day. This was just before Christmas. Have a look at the photos of my horrible nails and please tell me how I can repair them! Currently have an Opi nail and cuticle oil and am also regularly moisturising my hands and fingers.

Were they normal before? This looks like the fungal infection that causes lifting from nail bed not something that happens as a reaction to some stick ons….

Pigeonqueen · 21/03/2025 08:13

I think you need to seek medical advice for those. Looks fungal.

LetsGoToTheHills · 03/04/2025 10:46

Little update after all the helpful advice and in case anyone else comes across this thread with the same problem! I've cut them very short, have been avoiding soaking my fingers in water and have been using Dr Organic Tea Tea oil a few times a day. I've been using 'breathable' varnish to cover them up. I think they're improving somewhat...!

Your nails look SO much better now, OP. I think keeping them short is definitely a good idea - you can't catch them on anything and accidentally rip them then.

If you keep doing what you are then I imagine they'll grow out within a few months.

IBloodyLoveMyBlanket · 03/04/2025 10:51

That's actually a really nice length and shape on you, stick with that when they're better!

They look greatly improved, hopefully another couple of months and you'll be sorted.

LetsGoToTheHills · 03/04/2025 10:58

Yes re keeping short- there are two on my right hand in particular which are so so much worse for bashing on things (the pain!!!) when doing routine jobs like the dishwasher. It just undoes all the good work because they're so fragile

I find fake nail painful as my nail seem flat so the natural curve of the fakes ‘pulls’ on my nails. You have damaged your nails and will need to wait for that grow out. Keep moistening so the newer nail is healthy

SpectatorInLife · 03/04/2025 12:04

Looking sooooo much better now. The ends somehow look healthier than the middles. Keep doing what you're doing. I think the shorter the length, the better, until it all grows out. Thanks for sharing the update- its useful for us to see the outcome.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/04/2025 12:09

Wow they stick on did that in a matter of hours

how did you take them off ? Hopefully soaked them as looks like you have taken top layer of nail off

def go and see a proper nail salon

send pics to a few / ask on your local Fb page of good nail people

and see what they suggest for treatment

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/04/2025 12:10

They have improved and you can see how new nail is growing ok

does take a long time for a whole nail to grow

Ah I’ve had this ! Dreadful experience ! For me - it was a mixture of the builder gel they use for gel nails and a whole load of anti inflammatory meds prior to surgery. GP confirmed my Google diagnosis of Onycholysis. I stupidly (the first time) let them heal and went straight back to gel nails thinking it was a one off. And found out it wasn’t.

I used a nail oil every morning and eve - and Nails Inc Back to Recovery - two coats once a week (which just about covered the horrible look of them) - on both occasions it took 6 months to grow back to normal.

I feel you ! And they hurt so bad as well. But keep going with your treatments and maybe try that Nails Inc as it worked very well for me.

LetsGoToTheHills · 14/09/2025 15:01

Another update in case someone googles in the future and comes across this and it’s useful! Gradually improving nails but they are obviously very weakened and so are prone to (painful) bruising very easily (eg knocking a finger when reaching for something). I think it’s going to take at least a year if not longer…

Here they are. Some better completely and others have a long way to go

please tell me you are taking some anti fungal medication

LetsGoToTheHills · 14/09/2025 18:31

I’m sure it’s onycholysis and not fungal. Not much to be done except cut short, treat with oil and wait for it too all grow out. Sigh.

CoreyTaylorsbiggestfan · 14/09/2025 18:50

This looks fungal rather than onycholysis. Have you been to see anyone about this? It’s been going on for 9 months and it looks worse.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 15/09/2025 06:40

I’d go and see the doc just to be sure - it’s been going on for a long time and it’s looking bad in a new way now.

chillinwithmygnomies · 20/03/2025 19:15

It likely that you’ve had an allergic reaction, it looks like the nails have lifted away from the nail bed, best course is to keep them short and grow them out. I had a similar reaction on my little nail from gel polish, only one nail affected thankfully, but all I could do was cut it short and grow it out. On the darker nail though it does look a bit fungal so you could pop to the pharmacy and see if they can advise.

This sounds right. It happened to me with gel nails. They all looked exactly like yours. It's called onicholysis. All you can do is grow them out and keep trimming them. Mine are fine now but I can't ever have gels again.

Shoemadlady · 15/09/2025 07:06

Oh my goodness have you seen a dr? That looks like fungal nail

Laiste · 15/09/2025 07:16

Ooooh. OP ! Reading through for the first time and looking forward to seeing latest pics but honestly they look a bit worse than in April 🧐

Why the black? I feel it might be a fungal infection lurking under there.

I think you should go and see a doc and show all the pics. Update us 👍

HelloHattie · 15/09/2025 08:38

You really should go to your GP
