He often do you re-sole your shoes?

I feel like I always need to resole shoes. It’s a faff and pretty expensive so I can’t help wonder whether most people do this? In particular when people buy cheap shoes, do they just wear them until they get thin on the sole/ugly on the toe/ground down heels and then throw them out?
I buy good shoes and it kind of annoys me that they need to be re-soled so quickly. Not the thick lug soled shoe or boot but leather soled flats or heels.

The only footwear I ever had re-soled was a expensive pair of riding boots .

HoxtHun · 20/03/2025 19:03

Thin leather soles do wear out quite quickly. It’s possible to have an additional sole put on before the leather sole wears out - but that does take away from the prettiness.

ShowOfHands · 20/03/2025 19:08

I've never re-soled a shoe. The shoes I wore today, I've had for 25yrs.

Starlightstarbright4 · 20/03/2025 19:10

Never . My shoes are mostly cheap except the sketchers I wear for work . I bin them once they wear out

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 20/03/2025 19:10

I've never resoled a pair of shoes.

I've never had a sole wear out, and I've got some shoes I've had for 25 years!

If anything wears out on mine it's the uppers - I've had them wear through on top of the toe, ankle straps snap, or just get so scuffed and beaten up they look awful, and various other things. Mostly though they just go wildly out of fashion.

Although I really wish I'd kept a pair of wood insole, orange suede, platform sandals I had when I was 14. I threw them out about 10 years ago during a house move, in the belief that they'd 'never come back in style'... 😥

JoyousEagle · 20/03/2025 19:12

Never really. I had a really nice pair of boots that I had reheeled once, but other than that never. I throw them away if the sole becomes a problem but that really doesn’t happen very quickly at all so I do get good use out of my shoes.

WhisperingTree · 20/03/2025 19:13

Never. The only leather shoes I have are doc martens and I had those two parks for nearly 20 years now.

Otherwise I wear trainers. I wear out the tops before the soles on them. And you can’t resole them anyway.

Cyclingmummy1 · 20/03/2025 19:19

Every 3 or 4 years? But I rotate round about 6-8 pairs so maybe not a good comparison. Heeled every couple of years.

What kind of shoes do you wear? What are the soles like/made of? I have lug soles that never need re-soling and trainers of course. It’s the leather soles and heels that wear out fast for me.

I re-heel boots, those wear down after a year of use, but I have never re-soled a shoe.

PashaMinaMio · 20/03/2025 19:30

I have lots of shoes/footwear.
Some of them are high quality leather.
I do keep certain leather soled shoes for high days and holidays.
I polish my shoes and boots.
I do use shoe trees.
I have my decent leather soled shoes re-soled as necessary. Better than buying new and cheaper than replacing.

BackinBlack24 · 20/03/2025 19:31

Have never done this ever

Snugglemonkey · 20/03/2025 19:33

I have had my heels done far more often. I do have some boots that have been resoled a few times, but none of my shoes have ever needed it often, despite some of my good high heels being almost 20 years old.

MigGril · 20/03/2025 19:34

I think it depends on how you wear your shoes. My sister always went through heels really quickly so my mum would get hers reheeled.

The only pair of shoes I've had resoled where some boots. But you can't always have some modern shoes redone. Most of the time I've worn the tops and they would need replacing anyway.

NonComm · 20/03/2025 19:38

I have a pair of Ecco shoes that were expensive (to me) but really suit my dodgy feet. Bought them 10 years ago and just had them soled for the first time. They’re lovely.

StMarie4me · 20/03/2025 19:39

I never have? None of my shoes were expensive, but they last me years!

OpalFruitsYay · 20/03/2025 19:41

Boots every year if worn regularly.

I used to have nice work shoes when I worked in an office, leather soled, L K Bennett mostly. I would re- sole those maybe every couple of years, but I rotated around 5 / 6 pairs, and I changed to trainers for commute, so they only really got worn around the office, or for short walks at lunch / to visit clients.

Doggymummar · 20/03/2025 19:44

I had knee boots for about 25 years had them soled probably every 5 years, the uppers went so they were replaced this Winter. Other than that none of mine gave ever needed resoling. WFH now do I guess I won't need to.

CMOTDibbler · 20/03/2025 19:46

We have an amazing old fashioned cobbler who does all sorts of shoe repairs which always seems to then last longer than the original sole/heel etc. Between us, probably something goes to him every few months as dh likes leather soled shoes for work and walks miles in them when he's in London for meetings

HoxtHun · 20/03/2025 20:45

Well, this is a mildly astonishing thread! Though I don’t know why I’m astonished, when it seems almost no one wears actual shoes any more anyway.

It really is strange - to me - that so many people have never taken shoes to the cobblers to be resoled. And I don’t just mean dainty leather soled court shoes or loafers. I’ve spent most of the last few months in some chunkily soled ankle boots from Grenson - and they actually encourage wearers to send them back for repair when necessary. (It costs more than a cheap-ish pair of new shoes but is absolutely worth doing.) Now that the weather’s changed I’ll send those, while I wear my leather soled sandals - which will probably need resoling by autumn.

(Apologies for endless repetition of resoling!)

Dilbertian · 20/03/2025 21:03

I'm very heavy on my heels, so if I buy expensive shoes I only buy ones that can be reheeled.

Shoes that I wore every day tended to need reheeling at the end of their season - winter shoes in the spring, for example. But I haven't worn 'office' shoes or boots for many years, as I no longer work in an office. I tend now to wear soft-soles shoes that can't be reheeled. The heels generally wear out before the uppers.

I recently bought my first ever pair of DMs - because they've now got a resoling service on many models! No way would I spend that much on a pair of shoes that might only last me a couple of years.

As well as reheeling, I also wax and polish my leather shoes.

I only wear actual shoes and boots. When I wore heels I had them re-heeled regularly and occasionally had just the tip of the sole renewed.

Most of my shoes are now from Pretty Ballerina. They are very hard wearing. Some of them are years old and at most a few have had replacement tips only.

My boots are 3 year old Lanx and Joseph Cheaney. Only 1 pair has been re- heeled but that was because I damaged a heel by the way I took it off.

Oblomov25 · 20/03/2025 21:13

Nope. Never have.

thedevilinablackdress · 20/03/2025 21:15

OP is talking about leather soles, which as far as I know, are a) relatively uncommon for the vast majority of people to wear nowadays and b) much more likely to wear out or be damaged by water than those on a pair of trainers or DMs.

Most modern 'high street' shoes dunt seen too be designed to be repaired. As went many modern things...

Mikart · 20/03/2025 21:15

I have 3 pairs of boots i get resoled and heeled when necessary.....they cost between £200 and £400 but I've had them 20 years!
But I'm finding nowadays I live in trainers.
