Men buying on Ebay

GoldenGate · 18/03/2025 13:07

We have been selling some unwanted clothes on ebay, typically skirts/dresses in "plus" sizes eg 16/18/20 and some of DDs school uniform. A trend we've noticed is most are being bought by men, or at least buyers with exclusively male names. Not jumping to conclusions but is this a trend anyone has noticed? Obviously it could be men buying for their wife, their daughter, or even women setting up in DH name. Or theres a remote chance some men want skirts for themselves (fine) or schoolgirl items that fit them (less fine though its theirs once they've bought it). One such item was a tartan skirt DD wore to school not specific to them but marketed as a school skirt (Trutex Taylor blue). She was on steroids for certain conditions so had eg skirts in 36 waist etc.

Not reading too much into it but is this a trend noticed before?

I've noticed this both ways round. I think the likely answer is that couples share an ebay account in one person's name.

Halfhardy · 18/03/2025 15:59

Most couples share an account, I think.

UpMyself · 18/03/2025 16:30

I've had a few things bought by male-sounding usernames, or have had a man's name on the parcel.
Does it matter?

Gymbunny2025 · 18/03/2025 16:54

I use my husband’s PayPal. Hopefully no one assumed I was a pervy bloke 😂

Ilovelurchers · 18/03/2025 17:03

My ex used to buy me clothes on eBay and probably buys for his partner now, and definitely buys for DD who is in adult sizes. It's possible some are for men who like wearing skirts, but I wouldn't over think it.

(I am not judging you for your curiosity tho - when I sell second hand stuff I often wonder about why that person wants it, what they will use it for etc. It's normal to be curious I think).

GoldenGate · 18/03/2025 17:10

No it doesn't particularly "matter" as I tried to emphasise. Out of curiosity I wondered if this was common, particularly shared accounts which could make sense.

What really matters is decluttering clothes we don't need. Money is very modest for what they cost in the first place.

I use my partners PayPal

ginasevern · 18/03/2025 17:58

I've read that there's a market for used school uniforms and also children's underwear for pervy reasons. I imagine it's mostly men indulging in this.

Ihateboris · 18/03/2025 18:06

I've literally just sold a few pairs of size 8.5 stiletto shoes...all purchased by men!

Aussiegold · 18/03/2025 18:14

Yep, sold some dresses and bought by a man saying they were for his wife, probably true.

Sold some bras, went for quite a bit, but had some odd questions that I left unanswered....

MyBoysHaveDogsNames · 18/03/2025 19:24

I didn’t know you could buy men on eBay?!

UpMyself · 18/03/2025 19:41

I thought they were free.

SunnyViper · 18/03/2025 19:46

I’d not read anything into this.

I agree hence why I never sell children’s items

Brody77 · 18/03/2025 22:37

We have a joint eBay account in DH name but I use 99% of the time for me and DD but if I send messages on it I’ll always use my name

FlowerFlowerFlower · 18/03/2025 22:44

Who cares? I buy things for my son using my account some it’s a woman buying “men’s” things. 🙄

AngelsWithSilverWings · 19/03/2025 08:16

I always use my husbands account as I've never had my own. I just send him the links to what I want to buy or bid for and he does it for me.

drspouse · 19/03/2025 08:27

Vinted is easier (I find) and mainly women.

TeenToTwenties · 19/03/2025 08:29

My DH does all the ebaying in our house, and yes has a 'male' username.

GoldenGate · 19/03/2025 15:36

We've looked at Vinted but unsure if its reliable. Is it a viable alternative for odd clothes, not withstanding the new buyer protection and raft of anti private seller policies on ebay?

I work for a well-known e-commerce fashion retailer mainly aimed at teens and adult women. Our stats tell us our purchasers are mainly men😬

If I actually want to buy used, I don't really bother with Ebay any more. I just went looking for cheap small bike pannier racks for DD who's 10, and found some on Vinted. Everything on Ebay was new and expensive.

amylou8 · 19/03/2025 15:45

I sell all sorts of random house clearance stuff on eBay. Vintage womens nightwear, petticoats, stockings etc do well, and always to someone called Derek or Gordon or Nigel. Also often to a click and collect address. No judgement, they're not hurting anyone, but I do grin as I pack them.

HomeBodyClub · 19/03/2025 15:46

My dad orders things that my mum wants on his eBay or Amazon accounts. Doesn’t mean any of it’s for him.

pinkgown · 19/03/2025 15:54

I assume none of you have noticed how much well-worn "air hostess" shoes sell for on ebay? 😁
