Do you 'clipper' your sons hair in summer?? Should I? Whats the longest 'guard' you can get?

Both my sons hair is long, but they are waking up with it all sweaty stuck to their faces.

They will NOT sit in a hairdressers chair and ever attepmt I have made with scissors ends in disaster.

I can only thnk of clippers,

but don't want them to look 'skin head'ish.

Thanks x

Hiya - I do my ds's hair every summer for the same reason, he sweats loads through the night and his hair doesn't help. I hate cutting it short but it's so much more comfortable for him. Have you got a clippers set? We've just bought one and used the longest grade which I think was about an 8 or something, but because you are used to it looking long and lovely it WILL look like an awful skinhead until you get used to seeing it!

my clippers go up to an 8, but i don't use them anymore as both my boys are growing their hair

Ive found some with a 10, but thats only 3cms!

i let the hairdresser do it once to ds2 coz he wouldnt sit still long enough for scissors.
he looked bloody awful!!
never again.

i can cut ds1's myself as its curly. piss easy to cut curly hair. ds2s is dead straight. my amateurish attempts look exactly that on him. ds3 the same.

good thing dsis is training as a hairdresser, eh?

My sister is training as a hairdresser but she has only just started and tends to just cut it into more of a bob shape rather than trimming it all short iykwim.

lol.
bobs all round then for this summer!

perhaps next year she will know about layering - that should add a bit of interest, no?

I clip my boys' hair, as they like it short (but not skinhead ). Put the longest guard on, take a deep breath and don't stop until it's done.

WingsofaAngel · 13/05/2008 11:03

If the hair is too long then it will catch in the guards.
How about a barbers. My boys like the barbers they are usually quicker than the hairdresser.

I always cut my ds's hair myself with scissors and a comb. When he was tiny, I'd sit him in front of a DVD and leisurely cut away, not letting any hair fall onto him - I used to have loads of time to spare!

However, his hair has recently got a little thicker, so I'm able to use clippers as well. I only do the sides with clippers, starting off with a 12 so the hair doesn't get stuck, then I use a 7 and graduate to a 3 around the ears and at the neck. I use scissors and comb for the top and fringe area, leaving it a little longer. It takes around 20 mins to do. He has NEVER looked like a skinhead using this method.

However, the pic I have of him on my profile shows he's in need of a haircut.

The barber's is a great idea. Back in the day, that's where all boys went for their short back and sides.
