Need clothes for trip to london

My wardrobe is very tired and a little scruffy! I have a 3 day trip to london at the end of the month and need something new to wear, in low budget but happy to use vinted if needs be. We're sightseeing and eating out.

I'm 60, size 16, 5 feet 7, usually live in jeans and jumpers/tops but want to look a bit more upmarket I guess!

I have jeans I like, so mainly looking at tops/ jumpers and coat/ jacket. No idea yet what the weather will be like! I do have a Weird Fish rain jacket, but not keen on it anymore.

I'll be wearing trainers or ankle boots from Rieker to protect my painful feet.

Any suggestions? With links if possible.

TIA.

And you should definitely wear it! If sheer feels a bit much, you could always layer it over a T-shirt instead of a vest. Whenever I’m in London (and I go a lot) I see people dressed to the nines and dressed down, so absolutely feel free to wear the nice blouse. Last time I was there, I saw lots of people in their 20s in sequins and trainers and felt they’d struck a fun balance of dressed up and down simultaneously!

I'd be wearing it with a black skirt or jeans and chunky boots!

Upthread comment re puffa jackets taking up too much space at the theatre - I always sit on mine, makes any seat 100% more comfortable and pops back up like new each time.

Good idea!

I go to Kew regularly - I am a member. My favourite is the Princess of Wales Conservatory but it gets really hot in there (think tropical rainforest) and I always have to take my jacket off. There is plenty outdoors of course - my other favourite is the arboretum, which is at the fat end past the Japanese garden. Anyway, it's a very casual look at Kew. You will walk for miles.

I'm really looking forward to it, I've never been before. Thanks for the tips 😊

Go up the steps in the glasshouses too so you’re looking down on the plants, my favourite part of Kew.

If you want an easy to put together look https://susanafter60.com. You can substitute M&S for most items, though I could never wear her shoes ☺️
I put my size into Vinted, then select M&S or Joules etc.. and a couple of colours.

I live in London. Anything is allowed here; even scruffy clothes 😅 but if you want an extra escuse for shopping there is supermarket clothes, M&S, H&M. Some jeans/trousers , top, a nice jacket and trainers will do

Floisme · 19/03/2025 08:36

I'm glad if Susan After 60 is helpful for some and I applaud her for not doing paid promotions. However the kind of look she promotes for my demographic is why I would no longer state my age if I were asking for style advice on here.

I also wouldn't be too hasty to dismiss little Toast jackets although I'm not recommending blowing £300 on one (and nor, if you read her post, did @Bailiwitch). I have a few similar shape / length jackets in different fabrics (two are Toast from charity shops, the rest are vintage) and I think they're great for pulling together jeans and jumper / T shirt into an outfit that gets me into lots of places. For me, they nail looking 'pulled together'. They might not be what you want for this trip (although personally I'd take one to wear under a lighter weight coat) but in the longer term, I suggest they're worth thinking about.

If Susan After 60 is how I’m supposed to dress - I’m doing it all wrong …

I never know how these Insta people layer up so much clothing, scarves etc. I would die from heat exhaustion!

I'm always amazed at how hot most mumsnetters run. Is everyone perimenopausal on here?

I hate feeling cold. I take layers and waterproof outerwear wherever I go. I can always take them off.

I am menopausal but I also hate having to lug my coat around town with me. You’re in and out of buildings or the tube all the time. So I go in the basis of being a bit cold to start but I’ll warm up soon enough. I also believe in punctuating days out with many tea breaks 🤣.

glitterturd · 19/03/2025 11:20

I'm way past peri and still run hot. I would rather be too cold than too hot!

RockStarMartini · 19/03/2025 11:27

And I’ve got to an age where I expect people to worry about what they’re going to wear to meet me, rather than the other way around. It’s very relaxing …)

God I cant wait until I feel like that! OP you did come across a bit negative but I get how tricky it is - you just want to feel 'right' without a definite idea what that is. I know when I do feel right for me my day goes a million times better and I have a much nicer time - maybe that's a bit shallow but I'm not spending a fortune or anyone else's money so I dont think it's a big deal.

Yes to the steps, also the tree top walk is good. If you want to eat, the Orangery is pretty decent. You can book afternoon tea in the Botanical restaurant, which is a nice thing to do. Unless you have small children, avoid the restaurant by the kids' playground!

RachelleHulme · 19/03/2025 15:09

I would probably wear a flattering jumper dress with leggings. I love this colour at the moment.

Or in my case coffee breaks! 😂

No kids thank goodness. The Orangery sounds good.

I just looked at Susan. Yikes! It looks very American lady on a cruise ship, or at least what my imagination thinks that might look like.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/03/2025 20:55

I have a Cos jacket which has a similar vibe to the little Toast one, but I either wear it for work or instead of a coat for casual. I wouldn’t wear it under a coat.
