Eating a jelly cube for hair and nails - is this an old wives tale?

Just as the title really. I have read about this, possibly some on Mumsnet but can anyone here say that this has worked for them.

I have tried Rosemary oil and Biotin for my thin hair but dont really see any improvement after about 3 months so think this may be worth a try as I believe some have said it is like Collagen which i have also tried with no success lol.

It's essentially sugar and gelatine or pectin. No magical qualities, I'm afraid! Far better to look at your diet, and if appropriate, have a health check covering thyroid etc. If you're in your 40s, peri menopause can affect your hair and nails.

My diet is shocking, so I take a multivitamin every day. Nothing expensive, just Lidl's own, and that is doing a sterling job, according to my latest blood results.

Have you had your iron levels checked, I think trey need to be at 80 to prevent hair loss. Bone broth is a good source of collagen and you can make it at home from marrowbones or chicken

Is this a new hair/nail issue of its always been the same?
I too was going to ask if you've had blood done recently to check for deficiencies like anaemia, Vit D deficiency, thyroid etc?

Some jellies are now vegan. Others contain pork gelatine, which has a tiny amount of protein, but are high in sugar, so any supposed benefit would be negated by that!

Have you ever tried eating buckwheat? It’s great for hair and nails.

ScribblingPixie · 16/03/2025 11:16

You can buy plain gelatine in little sheets and add it to stews etc to see if it helps.

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like it is too good to be true. I have not had a blood test for a year or more but the last one was fine.

I will try buckwheat so thanks for that @Plugwug as it is something I did not know and worth a try. My diet is fairly healthy most of the time and I do take a multivitamin.

How long did you try the collagen for? It can take time to work. I’ve been taking the sachets and as much as I hate to admit, they do make a difference to my hair and nails but it did take a while. I was initially taking it for my joints and it worked for that too.

Get some cheap as chips zinc tablets. Most jelly is vegan now.

Not sure about hair but when I eat Jelly (a better experience than eating the cubes and makes for an acceptable pudding) nails get better within a few days. The decent jelly in the fridge sections of M&S and Waitrose are nice.

Well I had bought a Hartleys jelly so will just make it up and eat normally but thanks for all the tips above, I thought it sounded too good to be true lol.
