Alternative/rock/punk clothes

Ok bear (bare?) with me here...

I'm 37 and from 14 until my early 30s I always dressed in an alternative style. Rock/punk, a bit of goth for going "out out" kinda thing. Even at work (office jobs) I'd have a bit of a hint of it.

But since having my son 5 years ago I've noticed I just kind of wear general office wear or casual things. My shape changed, I was tired, I had no idea what I "should" be dressing like. I don't get much time for myself and money has been tight for a while so spending time and money trying to get my style back just hasn't really been a priority.

But I'm upping my hours and getting a pay rise next month! And I've lost a bit of weight the last few months too. Yay!

So amongst all the "sensible" plans, I also want to take a wad of money, spend some time looking for new clothes (can be vinted or whatever or New new) and get back to my rock roots! I think I'll feel so much better, like I'm getting some of the old Me back.

Anyone got any recommendations? Or just anyone else wanna jump on the "getting my groove back" train?

Have a look at Disturbia! You might get lucky and find some bits from there on vinted and depop, so definitely worth having a look on there too Shop Dark Romantic & Gothic Inspired Fashion, Accessories & Lifestyle – Disturbia

Ha ha glad I'm not alone!!

It's like I've suddenly come around and realised I've been dressing like my mum for about 3 years... My mum dresses pretty well TBF, but like... Where has all MY style gone?!!

You could try Killstar. Personally I prefer Disturbia as they are abit more mainstream but both brands are alternative.

jade3081 · 14/03/2025 17:39

Forgotten Tribes is pretty good for that type of thing

Cursory · 14/03/2025 17:44

Little Lies

Newnameahoy · 14/03/2025 18:05

I spent my life as a goth apart from a 1 year break in 2009 - when I had my daughter I thought that mum's wearing flowers and colour so that's what I did.....for a while. Thing is it made me uncomfortable in my own skin and I really disliked it. 3 or 4 years ago I just thought fuck it and now wear what I like. I love dusturbia clothes but I have little body confidence so don't buy any. I do however only wear black and obnoxious leggings from the cheeky little magpie day to day. If we go out and it's a big night I make something out of a giant t shirt and lace and get the platforms out. If it's just out I wear buffalo boots.

I feel like me again

I was going to post a link bit their current stock doesn't cut it.

I love Little Lies, and I also wear things from Manners London, esp the mesh range as it is super comfortable (no bra needed) and looks good. I was out last night at a gig in black skinny coated jeans, long DM boots, and a Manners top with full mesh back.

Some All saints stuff is quite nice, have a look on vinted

ASOS too can sometimes have some rock/ punk stuff

Noooo, has it? Not that I have shopped there for years to help keep it open but it felt like it had always been there and always would be! I spent so many Saturdays there as a teen.

I've remembered how much I love wide leg trousers. Enjoy a mens plaid shirt too. I know what you mean about missing your style.

OohKittens · 14/03/2025 20:20

Disturbia is my go to. I probably own 80% of their dresses. Little lies is quite good but doesn't have the range of disturbia.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/03/2025 21:24

I was also going to recommend Disturbia!

JaneJeffer · 14/03/2025 21:29

Have a look at EMP

Alkaline182 · 14/03/2025 21:32

Disturbia- but get it on Vinted. You can put together your own outfits too, by putting band T-shirts over dresses or wearing a long sleeve mesh top under a band tee. Once you search disturbia on Vinted the algorithm should start showing you similar stuff!

InfoSecInTheCity · 14/03/2025 22:42

This is me! Lost a fair bit of weight but some more to go and 5 years of working from home means my daily outfit was joggers and long sleeve black tshirt/hoodie. I have looked at a few of of the alternative clothing sites and feel like I need a middle ground between what I used to wear when I was young and carefree and what I wear now as a reclusive slob. I’ve found a few bits in unexpected brands on Vinted that I’ve enjoyed adding to my wardrobe.

Popsy clothing - Hallows dress, Barnabus dinosaur dress (basically their novelty & Halloween ranges), Bat print cardigan, book/library print dress. They have a cherry print 50s style dress they’ve released today that I’m tempted by.
M&S - black jeans, black boxy loose fit T-shirt

Needtojustendit · 15/03/2025 08:56

Disturbia is great, I buy a lot from there. Little Lies also great but the sizing on the bottoms can be inconsistent. Killstar is worth a shout, also Hell Bunny. Bad Monday apparel and P&Co are good for alternative t shirts.

cheesychipsontheoche · 15/03/2025 09:37

Have a look at the unfortunately named Minga on asos or Vinted. There’s also some lovely stuff listed as y2k/vintage on Vinted that might work

thinkofablinkingnamewoman · 15/03/2025 10:15

Ageing goth here 😁 Try The Black Wardrobe - just ordered their raven dress but would happily wear most of their stuff.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 15/03/2025 17:31

I am a little older than you and feel like I've finally got my mojo back a bit. It's great that we now have places like EMP and Disturbia for 'off the shelf alternative' but I get most my stuff from regular shops, places like New Look, ASOS, even H&M at times will have pieces that will work for an alternative style.

Recently got this jacket from Disturbia and the quality is fab, its fully lined which is more than can be said for the jacket I got from M&S. It's really helped goth up my work outfits a bit.

For more casual outfits there are loads of wide leg jeans, cargos etc in the shops. I got a great pair of wide flares from Next which I'm wearing today with a band tshirt and a red/navy checked shirt from GAP.

I think its actually a really good time to find alternative stuff in the shops!

H&M for the basics, like black t-shirts. Find a jean style and cut that suits you and buy that - Levi's fit me best and I get them off Vinted now. Then I would say have a browse on Vinted generally. There are some brands that are aimed at the alternative market like Disturbia and Killstar, but personally I feel much more comfortable in pieces that I have chosen myself. I think finding things that you love is part of the joy! You could search for 'goth' 'punk' etc on Vinted as a place to start, or look for specific materials, velvet, leather, tartan, PVC etc.
