Korean Skincare - Good gift idea?

xsquared · 12/03/2025 22:21

My sister is 40 soon, and I know she likes Korean skincare but I've not asked her what brand she uses.

I was thinking of getting this beauty box from Boots for her, but if it were you, would you be disappointed? I know people generally don't like gift sets.

Deffo agree about tkmaxx. They have some really great brands that I’ve bought from there. They currently have skin1004 which I really rate and I bought an axis-y serum yesterday. Great prices comparable to what I order online. I personally don’t buy from uk stores as the prices are usually very inflated but I’ve ordered a lot from stylevana and never had an issue. You just kind of accept it’ll be weeks before you have your order so I’ll do a bulk of whatever I’ll be running out of in the next few months. Also only buy things that are ‘in stock’ on these sites otherwise you’re likely to wait forever

IlovePond · 15/03/2025 17:14

@OvaHere - thanks for the Korean sites info. How much in customs charges were you charged on orders from Olive Young?

Also, do you have any Korean skincare recommendations? (Particularly anti-aging)

I have bought a couple of Korean lipsticks/glosses but don’t know where to start with skincare, (no snail stuff, though 😹)

Thanks

Ethnic skincare is like ethnic food - you have to be born into it to be able to use it on a regular basis. It is not made for Northern Europeans, it is geared towards its target audience. Now, colourful Korean cosmetics like eye shadow, lipsticks, etc. - totally different and a good gift for anyone.

Ridiculous

Thank you. My lord, they are not cheap 🤣.
Are they any stores (in London) that sell Korean beauty products? I’m quite nervous of buying online.

I first discovered this when I bought a gift set in a charity shop for £3. It’s fantastic and not at all, asa pp said,
for ethnic skins. Bizarre comment

Jolse is the only site I've had custom charges from.

I really like the Numbuzin No. 9 NAD Bio Lifting-sil Essence. It has 50 peptides in it and is relatively inexpensive. I got it in a set with the matching face mask but haven't used that yet.

I like the BANILA CO Clean It Zero Original Cleansing Balm. There's a few variations available. I've only tried the pink one. It does have a bit of fragrance.

I also got the BIOHEAL BOH Probioderm 3D Lifting Cream in their recent sale which is supposed to be a slow aging favourite but I haven't tried it yet.

IlovePond · 15/03/2025 20:03

Thanks @OvaHere - I will check those out.

On a sort of related note: Was it you who had the same Shiseido a/c as me? If so, how did you get on with the products?

OvaHere · 15/03/2025 21:10

@IlovePond Yes that was me. I'm afraid it's all still in the box on the top of my wardrobe. If my stash gets low enough I may unbox it or just wait for this Xmas.

Daftypants · 15/03/2025 23:33

I’ve posted on here already …skin thickness , texture , base colour , undertone melanin etc obviously varies significantly between different ethnicities.
However it also varies greatly between different white people in the UK 🇬🇧 too because a fair % of us who are white are a mix of European, Germanic and Scandinavian .
Best not to try the whitening ranges but the other products have been successfully used by many women in my group ( a group of men and women who have rosacea and sensitivity)

angelspike · 15/03/2025 23:47

If anyone is ordering and looking for ideas

innisfree microcara is amazing for lower lashes, the brush is like a tepe brush it’s so tiny
Missha cotton contour comes in great pale shades like smoked hazel which also works as an eyeshadow

IlovePond · 16/03/2025 00:00

I see @OvaHere - Xmas 25 will be upon us before we know it😹

I am loving the Shiseido lipstick - I will probably repurchase when it’s run out. The Ginza perfume is nice but doesn’t last long.

I have remembered I got some Korean skincare from TKMAXX- I must give it a go.

xsquared · 17/03/2025 17:36

Well, my sister is absolutely ecstatic with her present. Her first words were "I'm speechless!", so I'm pleased for her.

A bit gutted I missed out on a box but not enough to want to pay double on eBay!

aww glad she liked it, it is an excellent gift. You’re a lovely sister!

Pitstopperils · 29/03/2025 18:57

Hi, I'm 55 years old with sensitive combination skin. I've been using korean products for almost 15 years now. I would recommend Skin1004 and Ma:nyo in particular. Both are available through Olive Young Global. If I place an order, it normally arrives within 2 weeks. Cosrx is also good.

DoodleDoo37 · 29/03/2025 19:52

For those who like Korean skin products / make up - there is a great new shop called - "Pure Soeul" - I've been in it and they have fab products but you can order online also and they have offers.

ApiratesaysYarrr · 29/03/2025 20:44

I don't use make up, but I have a 17 year old cousin - would this beauty box be ok for young skin?

JMAngel1 · 30/03/2025 09:51

Huge second for the Numbuzin 9 essence - I’m 52 and it’s knocked a couple of years off me and only used it for around a week. It tightens and smooths and my face is definitely firmer. I’m definitely going to order the mask too.

Also love Numbuzin 3 essence to use with my Nu Face. Brightens and is a dupe for the SKII essence which is £££££

I also love Missha Time Revolution serum.

Medpeel and TirTir also excellent ranges.

I love the Yes Style app - I place an order around every 4 months - very good value and I always find a new favourite. I use more Korean and Japanese skincare than western and find it way more effective at hydration and anti ageing at excellent prices.

I’ve just discovered this shop! There’s one in central London so I’ll be off there on my next day off.

moonbug9 · 30/03/2025 10:56

if anyone is looking for recommendations, I religiously follow Gothamista's channel:

I recently bought the Haru Haru Wonder black rice probiotics barrier essence and can confirm that it is amazing. This is a Japanese product, but Hada Labo's gokujyun premium lotion (more of a toner) is always in my routine, too.

Oh shit! I've been eating Chinese, Indian, Thai, Mexican, North African and Mediterranean food for years - I'm of white Northern European heritage! Am I doing to DIE?? I need answers.

Well unfortunately the answer to that is yes one day. Aren’t we all, except for that weird bloke in America who takes 500 tablets a day and works out for 10 hours a day. Apparently he is going to live for ever. Although it probably will just feel like it if he never has any fun.

You can try TKMaxx, they have a selection in my local store, depending on the stock.

Boots have this in stock again but good luck using their website. I couldn't use my log in details (so couldn't get points) and ended up checking out as a guest. You would have thought they would have sorted out their website by now.

Thank you so much.
I've been checking every now and then, not getting my hopes up, but I've just been on the app to order it and 100+ have been ordered already!
