Supportive trainers for walking to work

Hi all, I need a pair of trainers for walking to work. I've recently got rid of my car and am generally enjoying the exercise. But, it's 3 miles each way along pavements with a giant hill and my knees are taking a hammering in my pumas (not sure of model, but they're the 90's style gazelle-type). I'm overweight and have big square wide feet!
I think I need something bouncy and not to worry too much about how they look. I have work shoes stashed and can't wear trainers to work anyway, so it's all about comfort. Not keen to go much over £100 if possible.

I wear the HOKA Bondi 8’s for walking and find them excellent for supporting my ankle and calves. Can’t remember the price of the top of my head but I think they’re about €150, you could try find a sale or first time customer discount.

Fitflop.

I have wide feet and wear new balance propel fuel cell v4 for walking & they’re so comfy!

I wear some Skechers walking trainers. I can't remember the name but they do several types. They're very comfortable and make walking much easier. I've been told by my 14 year old DD that Skechers are uncool but I don't care.

TallulahBetty · 12/03/2025 15:35

Skechers here

MiddleAgedDread · 12/03/2025 15:55

Sketchers are terrible for support! Never recommend by podiatrists.

thedevilinablackdress · 12/03/2025 15:58

ASICS

True. Although occasionally worn by them though.

Running trainers, men’s if you need the width. Kids if you’re under a size 7. Size up by a half size

I like Merrell walking shoes for long pavement walks, better for me than trainers. Worth going to an outdoors pursuits shop like Blacks and trying some on.

I walk a similar distance in and out of work. I use sketchers but with insoles for planter facilitates (sp) and this works out well for me. With their regular spongy insoles there is very little support.

Thanks for this idea! I love my Merrell sandals, didn't realise they did shoes for some reason

Was going to recommend Asics or Brooks.

UpMyself · 12/03/2025 16:48

If you go to an outdoor shop or running shop, they'll be able to look at your gait an advise the best shoe. They don't charge for it and there's no pressure to buy.

crouchendtigerr · 12/03/2025 16:51

I wear hiking shoes, mine are Salomon, but you can buy lots of brands. I see lots of people wear Oncloud shoes too

Seeingalight · 12/03/2025 16:54

Adidas running trainers are brilliant. I don't run but I do a lot of walking and need a wider toe box.
I've also had brooks and mizunos, both have decent wider toe areas and amazing running soles.
Running trainers have specific technology to help propel you along.

NellieJean · 12/03/2025 17:30

A make that’s ideal for one person won’t work for another. Go to a proper sports shop where they have a machine that can measure your gait. Most have a charge for this which they knock off the price of the pair you buy to stop people using the service and then buying on Amazon. They will recommend 2/3 different ones that will suit you.

This is really interesting. I'm totally clueless! Thank you.

I have a similar pedi-commute to you and I swear by Nike Air Max. So comfy and bouncy and unpinchy. I still haven't pulled the trigger to spend more than the usual prices on a GoreTex waterproof pair, but I really should.

evilharpy · 12/03/2025 17:58

I also have big square wide feet and have always worn Saucony for running (after gait analysis) as they have a wide toe box and are very roomy.

SwedishEdith · 12/03/2025 18:03

I bought Merrell trainers last year for commuting. No breaking in but better with an insole. I'd buy again. I damaged my knees with Skechers so not for me.

CarefulN0w · 12/03/2025 18:12

Sketchers arch fit. Honestly the best I have ever had for being on my feet all day and walking +++

BBCK · 12/03/2025 18:31

Nike Goretex Men’s are brilliant

Pinkpupsx · 12/03/2025 18:36

Another vote for ASICS. I have the Nimbus Gel ones and they are so supportive and comfortable. I also have wide feet so I went up half a size.
