Aveeno stinging - alternative for eczema?

Aveeno changed its formula a couple of years ago and since then it stings when applied to eczema.

Has anyone found an alternative that doesn't sting?

Cetraben or epiderm

Child’s farm baby moisturiser. But when it’s inflamed everything hurts.

I use Bepanthen on any inflamed bits of eczema (usually affects my eyelids, neck and inside of elbows) and a regular body lotion/face moisturiser on the rest.

CeraVe

Cetraben or epiderm

Moo Goo is the ONLY cream that didn't sting mine and DDs reactive allergy prone skin, even when it was cracked and weeping.
It's expensive ish £10 for a tube of their full cream.
So gentle and nourishing.

And not a steroid which thins and damages your skin over time.
Nor is it a greasy paraffin emollient cream which feels awful and gets everywhere

Faithsmumof3 · 11/03/2025 23:25

Dd had a reaction to the new aveno formula so we tried a few and ended up using E45.

Doublebase - goes on like a gel and doesn’t sting at all.
Moogoo
Dream cream from Lush (everything else in there is hell but that is lovely).

GoodEnoughParents · 11/03/2025 23:26

Also as a thicker barrier on top of the Moo Goo I will also use Bepanthen if needed but honestly I can't rave about MooGoo enough. Everything used to hurt and I used to feel miserable, it was a long journey to healing and
I used to be on steroids non stop but they damaged my skin, discoloured it, made it weak and more prone to damage

I've weaned off them now and my skin is in the best condition it's been since childhood

GoodEnoughParents · 11/03/2025 23:27

I also second Dream Cream for when my skin is feeling good and I want something fancier - not on the face though

Thanks all! I’ve bought some MooGoo, fingers crossed. It’s for my toddler - he’s been screaming the house down with the Aveeno. I noticed the stinging myself when I apply it after shaving, hopefully these other options are better! So annoying when formulas change.

There's sooo many different emollients. As it's for your toddler you could ask the GP to suggest and prescribe something to try.

In my house, me and all my 3 kids have eczema. We all get emollients prescribed but we all have different ones, not sure why really!

I use dermol cream - I used to use a different one that ceased production and the GP just swapped it to dermol. It's fine but it's antimicrobial which I only realised very recently so when I finish this tub I'm going to ask for one without active ingredients as I don't need them, I don't frequently get skin infections.

DC6 uses hydromol cream.

DC3 was under dermatology for awhile when younger as eczema was so bad and treatment resistant. He uses dermol cream as a shower gel substitute in the bath and hydromol ointment as an emollient - both on the advice of the dermatologist.

DC4 months developed eczema few weeks ago, rapidly worsening, and has been prescribed epaderm cream, which seems to be helping.

I can think of loads more even just off the top of my head: doublebase, E45, Cetraben..

Cetaphil is very good
I can use Aveeno but e45 stings like hell

Baninarama · 12/03/2025 15:34

Battles udder cream - amazing stuff. As the name suggests, it's formulated to hang onto the underside of muddy cows, so it's superb on hands and children. It has worked wonders on my winter dermatitis and the dc's eczema.
