How do I achieve this swishy hair? My hair and inspo pic incuded

I have a lot of hair (Indian origin). But I have never really developed a good way of styling it. I went to school in the noughties when straightening hair polka straight was the look. I still do the same as a 30 yo. And just want to step up (I’m doing a whole makeover thing post baby/ppd). But I would love to achieve the very very loose curls you see in this image. Would you use a hairdryer and round brush? Rollers in hair?

I always get the hairdresser to style my hair straight as when I go for a wave they do too small a wave which i think looks terrible on me.

im showing my hair in its natural state - I do usually have it straightened. Just can’t be arsed today

Thanks in advance

Not sure why you need to do anything to your hair - it's gorgeous!

AlexandraJJ · 11/03/2025 12:31

Large plate straighteners with thick chinks of hair (a lot thicker than if you were curling) or run straighteners through one section at a time and put straight into large rollers whilst hair is hot and leave to cool for 30 mins to set

You have beautiful hair, I'm very jealous!

My hair can sometimes go like your inspo picture after having curls in and sleeping on them. I curl with straighteners and try to do a loose curl. Then sleep with it in a silk scrunchie tied loosely on top of my head, and a silk bonnet so that the next day when I brush it through there's a really nice, natural wave. Wish I could work out how to just get the waves from day 1, might try previous posters tip on using bigger sections!

Thank you. With all the fly aways it looks a litttle crazy in person.

Will try this! And how far do you take the roller- a the way to the root? I’ve seen images where people on do the rollers on the mid to lengths?

Thanks a lot

You have lovely hair! But to achieve a smoother wavy effect I think a big dryer brush might help - I have a Revlon One Step.

Thank you. Have been toying with the idea of getting one for years. Do you find it damaging? My hair is very prone to split ends as it is on the curly/dry side

I just never figured out how to get the sleek/smooth hair without straightening the absolute heck out of my hair.

The shark flex or air wrap give that sort of look if you use the large barrels.
I can never get it to last though!

isitmeamithedrama · 11/03/2025 12:45

The picture you're hoping to achieve looks like a blow dry on a large round brush
You'd probably achieve the same by blow
Drying and setting massive rollers while hair cools.
A smoothing serum would help tame flyaways as well

Blinko · 11/03/2025 12:47

if I slept with straightened hair with the rollers in would you get close to the look? Or do you need the heat to get the shape?

Your hair is stunning!

isitmeamithedrama · 11/03/2025 13:09

@Blinko I think sleeping on it might encourage flyaways/frizz could counter it by wearing a silk bonnet.

I think heatless curls tend to be a bit tighter and the large rollers to achieve the look you want would be very uncomfortable to sleep on

Aside from styling I think shampoo makes a big difference to how soft and swishy your hair can be. I switched to high end shampoos like kerastase or L’Oréal professional and my hair looks way better. It will go some way to achieving the sleek swishy look when you do come to style it

See I really don’t notice a difference when it comes to posh shampoo/conditioner.
