Getting rid of greys on highlighted hair - advice on home dye please!

Hello

I’ve always had my hair highlighted but things have been a bit difficult recently and I simply can’t afford to go to the hairdresser and get it done now. My greys are really showing and I just want to get rid of them but I’m not sure what colour I should go for if I’m just getting a root touch up dye - obviously the ends are a lot lighter than the roots. Any advice hugely appreciated and photo attached.

It looks like it needs a few deep conditioning treatments?

Try lezara colour conditioner

You’re not going to get a good result with just a root touch up as the ends are lighter. If you want to cover the greys you need a box dye that’s matched to the darker colour at the root (ie a mid brown). This will dye it all the same colour. The other alternative is to get a hair cut rather than a colour (cheaper!) and get rid of as much of the lighter colour as you can so the rest slowly grows out - I’m about to do this myself.

Use a purple shampoo to brighten the greys.
Also a conditioning treatment or 12 week blowdry would help.

I've had reasonable success using plantuur 39 caffeine brown shampoo on similar colour hair. It tints the greys to more like a blonde.
It's not perfect and takes a little while to build up.
I used to add in a purple shampoo once a week, or sometimes blend the two just to try and avoid it being too yellow.
I would put it only on the non highlighted bits, leave for 5 mins then rinse.
Alternatively a light spraying of dark blonde root touch up spray across the top?

Interesting is that because you think it looks dry/ in bad condition or something to do with colour itself? I’m not sure what deep conditioning would do re colour ?

Hi @Localres ,

I've a good friend that uses Clairol's Nice n Easy at home box dye. Her hair looks amazing.

She applies the product to her whole head and somehow it looks like she has highlights going all through it. I was stunned when she explained she was using an at home box dye- it genuinely looks like she's had balayage at a high-end salon.

Interestingly she doesn't use a colour close to her natural colour (Mediterranean colouring), she's actually gone a few fair shades lighter, it really suits her. She may have a lot more greys than I realised, hence why she's been able to go so light, it's like a very light chestnut colour, with blond-ish highlights running through it now.

It does look dry and would benefit from a mask or treatment, colour wise I stopped colouring my hair in lockdown and liked the natural look before that I found Castings colours, which are semi permanent to be the best for me. They last 24 washes which for me is about six months.

Grey hair just looks dry because it can be wiery. My hair is highlighted but the odd grey that escape look worse condition than the other highlighted hairs. It’s just the nature of grey hair. You don’t need to condition. Op why not try Just for Men. Muuuuch cheaper!

Have never heard of this! Brill thank you! I’ve bought Just for Men in the past!

I use home highlighting kits with a magic cap for my highlights and then cover the greys with the this:

www.amazon.co.uk/COLOR-WOW-Cover-Medium-Brown/dp/B00FYSZDQ4

It really stays on until next wash and blends in perfectly.

Many thanks for the suggestions! My hair does definitely tend to dryness, though the pic is particaurly bad as I took it in harsh light on gym hair. Really like the idea of the tinted shampoos, thank you @SockPuppet - I’m a bit nervous of anything permanent as I’m a home dye amateur and hope that my financial gloom lifts in the future and I can get it done in the salon again one day!
