Clothes for a walking holiday

Going to an African country in the summer where we are doing a fair bit of travelling around and walking. I'm not looking for a stylish or beautiful look (so no crisp white shirts or wide brimmed hats) but something very practical, lightweight and easily washable. We only have a cabin bag and won't have a washing machine for most of the time so I will need to be able to hand wash it easily. My go to trousers were a wide legged pair from Primark that I got about 10 years ago but will not last another summer. They are very light weight, airy and really easy to wash. The label says viscose mix, but I haven't been able to find any similar material 😭Top wise I have longish t shirts, so I just need trousers.

The brief (if you are still reading):

-full length
-preferably wide legged (no leggings, not keen on tapered ankle either)
-very light weight (no traditional walking trousers material, too heavy)
-not jersey material

Any ideas very welcome.

Traditional walking trouser material (especially for summer) will actually be lightweight and not heavy. Synthetic fibres (much as I usually hate them) will be best as they'll dry more quickly than cotton.

Do you have a branch of Mountain Warehouse nearby? They're at the lower end of the price range. For example,

Second going to a waking shop - Cotswolds , trespass - for light walking trousers that also dry very quickly

What a fab holiday.

Do you need to be careful of colours (eg natural tones. And avoid black, blue & white as those attract tse flies)? No camo patterns either.

From my Zambia safari experience:

  • you'll definitely need a hat & sunglasses
  • I'd suggest a thin/gauzy scarf too - can be scarf or sun cover or tie on hat in open-topped jeeps
  • I like a vest t-shirt with loose cotton shirt (not a look I favour anywhere else!)
  • I'm not sure about wide leg for bush walking - too flappy and liable to catch on bushes. I think PP is right about lightweight walking trousers (I had some from Go Outdoors)

I was in Primark today and they have some which sound similar to the ones you're describing

Thanks everyone, will check these out. Must do a Primark trip, I'd be so happy to get a similar pair.

Craghoppers, Patagonia, mountain warehouse own brand etc all sell walking trousers that are quick drying. Get a block of travel soap that is multi purpose - I have one suitable for clothes, hair, body ... brilliant. Get microfibre underwear as dries quickly and is super lightweight, i would advise full length trousers and socks you can tuck them into and full length sleeve tops for both sun and mosquito protection, boots have the high deet spray, use twice as much as you think you need (I didn't, got bitten badly and got mild dengue, India not Africa thankfully, no malaria where I was)

Don't buy wide leg due to aforementioned mossies!

Rohan are really good for travel wear. Spendy but can find on Vinted. Even anti mosquito clothing etc..

Walking trousers all the way, they are light, breathable and dry easily.
The craghoppers prostretch are my go to (must have stretch)
Also like the mountain warehouse hiker stretch ones.

Don't forget good socks and well fitting shoes ir boots

Sorry should have made it clear, they aren't wide leg like the ones that are in fashion now, but straight cut trousers that are wider than standard trousers. My legs are a weird shape so I need something wider, otherwise they will be tight on my calves. I do tuck them into socks anyway, so no flapping around.
@minnienono we always travel very lightly and I have some 'hacks' that would put most people off travel for life :-D

Definitely not fashionable but Craghoppers Kiwi trousers You can also but zip offs so they can convert to shorts if you want the change .
Also if you need to buy walking boots / shoes , consider leather ones , they will be heavier but if walking in dry , dusty conditions they won't let the same in , are more sturdy if stepping on things rocks , near snakes / creatures and better in wet as well .
