Does anyone take collagen? What benefits has it had on you?

I see a lot of adverts and people taking collagen now but interested to know if people have actually noticed any benefits and if so, what they are. Thanks.

No - I was tempted but then a quick Google told me I'd be wasting my money as there's no proof they do any good.

Bignanna · 09/03/2025 18:11

The only thing that’s any good orally apparently, is bone broth.

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 09/03/2025 18:13

Just eat a collagen rich diet- lots of carrots, berries, fish, green veg etc

Lolopolo · 09/03/2025 18:35

I take it for my nails, they are super strong and long when I take it & break when I don’t. My skin is pretty good but I can’t say it’s down to the collagen as I use retinol, a facial micro current device and have Botox.

Laiste · 09/03/2025 19:13

I took bovine collagen for 6 months and it did nothing.

I wonder if marine collagen is better? Too pricey for me though so ...

MaggieBsBoat · 09/03/2025 19:14

I’ve started taking marine collagen so let’s see…

psuedocream3 · 09/03/2025 19:49

It's used for joint pain relief and for building muscle mostly but people do notice stronger nails.

I take collagen peptides. I have pains which one doctor said was arthritis then another one saying its all in my head, very hard to get a diagnosis on pain without swelling. Anyway, its helped alot with the pain. My nails are strong enough to grow to a decent length too now.

To be honest I was originally looking for something to make my hair grow faster, healthier but as I started taking iron at the same time, and started a better haircare routine and less heat its impossible to say if any improvement was due to that.

Definitely worth it for the joint pain relief though.

Thepossibility · 09/03/2025 20:47

It has stopped my joint pain completely and my skin loses its glow whenever I run out.

Poonu · 09/03/2025 20:49

@psuedocream3 @Thepossibility which brand did you take?
Love the name @psuedocream3

LunarValleyInMyMind · 09/03/2025 22:28

following as I've been wondering about this too

do you take the tablets or the powder? is there any difference?

QueenOfHiraeth · 09/03/2025 22:44

I take collagen peptides and have seen absolutely no difference at all so won't continue after this lot.

I had collagen capsules first - zip, zilch, nada but thought maybe powder would be more effective. Now part way through an enormous tub of the stuff and again, absolutely nothing.

Foot problem no better, wrist no better and possibly worse, hair still thin and fluffy, nails still breaking and splitting.

I cannot think of a single positive effect for me

ChangingHistory · 09/03/2025 23:17

My research said collagen will be broken down by your body into amino acids then reassembled in whatever form your body most needs. So to me it's logical it'd help muscles and joint pain but I can't imagine my body prioritising wrinkles.

Lostsadandconfused · 09/03/2025 23:23

I do. I can’t say I’ve noticed any effect on skin hair etc, but any effect would be gradual and minor I assume.

I have noticed my joints are less grumbly when getting out of bed in the morning, no stiffness. So for me, it’s worth it for this alone.

Knees stopped clicking!

As someone who spends a lot of time extracting collagen from various animal tissues on the lab, I am fairly sure the only one of these things that contains collagen is fish - collagen is a protein complex that is in skin, muscle, bone, ligaments, connective tissue etc. It is used to produce gelatin/jelly - haribo sweets are essentially boiled/denatured pig skin.

Vegan collagen supplements and fruits/veg do not contain collagen - just things that might help your body produce collagen.

As others have said, bone broth, which will be collagen extracted from boiling bones (how cooks made jellies in the past) is the best thing to eat.

Weefreetiffany · 09/03/2025 23:29

Big spoonful in my latte to up protein intake at breakfast to 15g. Not noticed any benefits other than feeling less hungry.

SallyDraperGetInHere · 09/03/2025 23:29

I googled collagen supplements recently (a particularly haggard day) and the preponderance of subscription schemes was enough to make me dubious. Having said that, I just bought a tub of collagen face cream in Boots. I’ll report back!

Mytholmroyd · 09/03/2025 23:31

It is vital of course to have enough Vit C to make and maintain good collagen - if you don't your connective tissue breaks down and bleeds and you get scurvy.

angelinawasrobbed · 11/03/2025 08:57

Friend of mine takes it and she glows - hair and skin

so I have started, seen no difference except that yes! My knees aren’t as bad
