Time to get my 12 yr old a bra (sob) where should I take her?

MummyPenguin · 12/05/2008 13:55

I've never been fitted myself have always only ever guessed at my size and bought what I thought fits!! However, with DD I want to take her to be properly measured, so where is good to take a girl for a first bra? M&S? Anywhere else?

Bhs do a good range for younger girls, I'm not sure if they measure though...

GregorSamsa · 12/05/2008 14:01

M&S are rubbish at measuring. If she has proper boobs, then take her to a proper shop (John Lewis, or Rigby & Peller). If like me 13yo dd she just has pimples but has outgrown the crop top scenario, then measure round her chest just below her boobs and order something like these in the appropriate chest size and an AA cup.

And forgoodness sakes, girl, get yourself to a proper bra fitter. R&P are the business -- you come out with a whole new body shape and look as if you've lost a stone. In fact you could both go together for a girly outing...

nickytwotimes · 12/05/2008 14:02

I was going to suggest John Lewis or a local independent - they can be very good.

PuppyMonkey · 12/05/2008 14:03

Rigby and Peller??? Never heard of them, are they a regional thing?

GregorSamsa · 12/05/2008 14:05

No, posh London bra shop. It's where the queen shops, doncha know. Although actually I'm presuming they come to her.

GregorSamsa · 12/05/2008 14:06

They are fab though, and not at all indimidating. Expensive, but so worth it.

Buda · 12/05/2008 14:10

If you are in or near London then def R&P - great at measuring. Actually they don't use a tape - just look at you.

John Lewis also good.

Or Debenhams.

M&S are crap imho.

SNoraWotzThat · 12/05/2008 14:15

my dd would have been mortified if I took her to get fitted. I did it for her at home, and she is very happy with the ones we chose online from M&S. You can send or take, them back if they don't fit.

Same shops as Buda.

witchandchips · 12/05/2008 14:17

yes m&s crap at measuring. How many of us have been measured in M&S to be something like 38B and been given a monoboob that rests gently on our post natal bellys?

MumRum · 12/05/2008 14:18

DD was measured for her first bra at M&S after christmas... I thought they were OK, woman went off and brought lots of different ones for her to try on... I think they have a range called angel.... I must admit now I know what size she is I have brought her some more from tesco's...
Will take her back to M&S to have her measured again soon as I'm sure shes grown... shes 12 in July, think she must get them from her father

witchandchips · 12/05/2008 14:19

Mum their crapness is really only apparent on the older breast

electra · 12/05/2008 14:20

Bravissimo or R&P. You should avoid anywhere that uses a tape measure.

pofaced · 12/05/2008 14:21

just want to change tack slightly: my DD has little "buds" that are noticeable in a t-shirt but a long way from wobbling etc She doesn't wear vests and is quite a tomboy. When I was her age/ same stage of development I didn't wear anything but underwear has changed and am wondering if I should get her a crop top/ support vest or do I leave it until she says something/ she actually needs a bra?

ps glad I'm not the only woman to find M&S bras and fitting rubbish!

foofi · 12/05/2008 14:23

Just to redress the balance I would like to say that I think Rigby and Peller are crap and I buy most of my underwear in M&S. If you like going round without being able to breathe, and want to be charged a fortune for it, by all means go to R&P.

SNoraWotzThat · 12/05/2008 14:25

electra
what do they use then if they don't use a tape measure?

were you all measured for your first bras?

I would have rather carried on wearing a vest until I was 18 then have mine measured/fitted.

MummyPenguin · 12/05/2008 14:27

Okay not M&S then. No, she doesn't have proper boobs, but noticeable buds, and now she's wearing vest tops etc I think we need to preserve her modesty a bit!! I will have a look at that link, GregorSamsa, and measure myself, like you say. I too thought she'd be "well embarassed" (as she'd put it) at being measured. Particularly as she has a large Molluscum right between her boobs poor love.

MumRum · 12/05/2008 16:42

I think they measured DD over her crop top in M&S...DD would have been mortified if she'd needed to be topless....

GrapefruitMoon · 12/05/2008 16:50

pofaced, my dd is at the same stage and I got her some crop tops - the more recent ones actually are quite bra-like in shape but flat iyswim. Think i got them in M&S and BHS...

Psychomum5 · 12/05/2008 16:53

I got my DD's their first bra's from tesco.

I got them 28aa to start, and then just got bigger sizes as they have grown.

DD1 now has bra's from new look.....padded and underwired which I don;t really think is good or neccessary, but it what they all wear at school and she needs to fit in!!!

I measured her myself.....measure under the boobs for the size, and then around the boobs for the cup.....has worked so far, and she is looking fine (altho of course at the age of 14, boobs are still pert and would look fine in anyhting!!!

DD3 is now just starting to 'bud' so she will be needing crop tops very soon.....they all seems to want and need a wee bit more cover as soon as they 'bud'.

Actually would agree that 12 yr old doesn't need R&P and def not Bravissimo.

And if you think she would be embarrassed I would just buy a few in the smallest size for her to try on at home and return the ones that don't fit.

GregorSamsa · 12/05/2008 17:24

Having said that, some of dd1's friends have a C-cup at 12. In which case, R&P is perfectly in order, assuming you're feeling generous. But for little pimply boobettes, I think a DIY approach to measuring and the M&S website is fine.

colditz · 12/05/2008 17:27

Good God don't take her to Rigby and Peller, she might grow out of them in 6 weeks! It's not like babies and shoes, you know, they don't need to be the best bras when they're young, a nice little training bra from M&S or similar will do fine. A very expensive bra might make her feel different and embarrassed anyway.

claricebeansmum · 12/05/2008 17:29

Snora - in R&P they just look at you. Ah, says matronly but kindly type, so you're a 36B wearing a 34D...and then she comes back with armfuls of bras and you try them on and dicuss the fitting, then she teaches you to put a bra on properly, you discuss more and the you purchase and you are a different - very different woman.
