Hi everyone, I am trying to decide whether to buy the Dyson or the Shark. Any feedback on either?

Many thanks.

I have the shark so can’t compare to the dyson but it’s now just a very expensive hairdryer. I don’t use the tools on it as I prefer my straighteners and babyliss big hair.

schoolsoutforever · 08/03/2025 07:25

Yes, I have the Shark and agree withe the comments above. I prefer using my straighteners to curl. Plus I think it made breakage worse. I would recommend trying before you buy. Wish I had.

I have both.

The auto-wrapping barrels on both do exactly the same job. Neither last as curls but turn into a good bouncy blowdry with loads of volume and a bit of movement on the ends.

If you have long hair the Dyson might just win, as you can get the Dyson Long with slightly longer wrap barrels. (That’s what I’ve got.)

The brushes on both are all too big for anything less than below shoulder length hair. You can buy an extra brush for the Shark which is slightly smaller, but still pretty big.

Honestly though I wouldn’t buy either again. If I want curls I use a wand or my ancient heated rollers.

Just agreeing with the breakage. The round brush on my shark broke my hair. It’s not very smooth when running through my hair and I did get breakage.

@schoolsoutforever I have never been able to master curling with straighteners.

I would also add - look at CEX online as there are always lots of both Dyson and Shark for sale second hand. They are graded so you can pick one closest to ‘new’ as possible.

I got my Dyson that way and some of the brushes were still unused in their cardboard sleeves. It was graded B.

Still wouldn’t buy it again, even for the £290 think I paid!

I have the shark and I love it. The hairdryer part dries my hair much quicker than my old hairdryer and I think it left my hair softer. I use the paddle brush type attachment to semi straighten and then if I fancy it, the curlers to add waves or curls. I can do all this in 5-10 minutes from wet, and it will last a couple of days - though my hair is quite thick and naturally wavy and keeps styles well. I also found I could leave it an extra day between washes when I used at vs no, or old hairdryer.
I can't comment on the Dyson personally as I don't have one but I have a friend who has one and loves it also, same hair type as me so maybe that has something to do with it.

My shark makes a terrible noise, it's such a high-pitched racket that it puts me off using it. It's worse than a Dyson hand dryer but you have to put it right beside your ears. It only gives a slight wave rather than actual curls.Only half my hair fits on the barrel so it's no good for long hair.

Oceangrey · 08/03/2025 07:42

I have the shark and love it for my very thick curly hair.
It's the first time I've ever been able to blow dry my hair, with the round bush. The curl things are fun but I have so much hair it takes an age so I don't really use them much.
It is loud and my hair takes a while so I put earplugs in!

jeaux90 · 08/03/2025 08:02

It really depends what you want to use it for.

I've had an airwrap for 5 years now. I have really curly hair and it's amazing for a salon style blow dry or getting your hair straight.

If you want it poker straight you still need to use straighteners.

The barrels for curling are excellent but it takes a bit of practice.

Girlintheframe · 08/03/2025 08:06

I tried the shark through qvc. You can return if you don't like it, think it's 60 day trial.
I really liked it for drying hair however the curling just didn't work for me but I have fine hair and the curl just wouldn't hold. My DS and DN also have it and their hair looks incredible with big bouncy curls but they have a different hair type to me. I ended up buying the shark hot brush which dries my hair really sleek then add curl with my straighteners

@schoolsoutforever I have never been able to master curling with straighteners.

Is it specifically curls you want OP or just texture? If you'd be happy with waves then 3-barrel wavers (eg Mermade) are a doddle to use

MissAtomicBomb1 · 08/03/2025 08:26

I researched both the Dyson and shark before getting mine and came to the conclusion there was really nothing in it.
Went for the shark as it was cheaper. I echo the other posters though that they're not worth the money. The curls/waves don't last.
You're better off just buying decent separate tools.

DecafDodger · 08/03/2025 08:35

I have both, I keep Dyson for daily use and Shark comes to gym and trips.
Love both of them. I have fine thin hair, and I can get bouncy curls in just a few minutes. If you want tighter curls, Dyson has a slim extra barrel. They will still be quite loose, not tight corkscrews. And my hair is in so much better condition compared to when I used traditional curling, or Big Hair brush.

You can get pretty similar result with either. But Dyson is easier to use. First, the direction change barrels. Also the button placement is better, you can operate it easily with one hand, but I need both hands to turn on the cold on Shark, and always need to check I am not blocking the air inflow with my hand. So for me, Dyson wins and I would get another if it breaks - but for value for money, Shark is better.

jeaux90 · 08/03/2025 08:37

@DecafDodger makes a good point. My hair is in great condition with the Dyson.
