What to wear with wide legged trousers

I bought some really nice wide legged trousers in Fenwick last week and I need a top to wear with them. They're grey with a navy pinstripe and they're very wide so I feel I need a fitted top and maybe a short top that is short enough to stop at the waistband so I don't look like I'm wearing a sack. I tried them on with a vest too I had on at the time and they looked good with that but I want a bit more coverage.

If I can link them I will.

Navy or white would look good.

help!

They are OSKA brand, mid grey with a blue pinstripe but would work for office or home. I cannot find a link unfortunately

I'm ancient and wear wide-legged trousers with a fitted buttoned cardi. That's probably put you off 😊

I often go for a fitted bodysuit with wide leg trousers as I don’t like having my stomach showing and hate things coming untucked! A plain white t-shirt style might work for a casual look and you could get something a bit smarter if necessary for the office. I’d personally avoid the peplum type styles above as they would make me look like a tree trunk.

Something fitted is best on top to add balance. I have a few fine knit slim fitting tops from various places that I wear with wide legs. I also have several short cardigans from whistles - they are boxy as opposed to fitted, but look great with wide legged trousers.

They sound nice. At the moment I like them with a tank top / knitted vest / knitted waistcoat, or whatever you want to call it, over a T shirt.

I haven't got this Cos one or even seen it but it looks like the kind of thing I mean:

Or you could browse the wide leg trousers on any shopping website and see what else they're they're teaming them with.

I tend to wear wide legged trousers with a fitted top and a shorter cardigan. I’ve got a couple of Bardot style tops which look good with them too.

Same question! What about shoes under wide legged trousers? Chunky trainers? Thank you!

TartanMammy · 07/03/2025 12:26

Plain and fitted on top. A crisp white t-shirt or shirt would work well, or a body suit.

I'm still getting used to tucking things in, I always felt it was unflattering as I'm chubby but I find it's all that works with wide leg trousers.

Assuming the style suits, I don’t think you can go wrong with chunky trainers!

It hasn't! I nearly bought a navy one to wear with them but DH wasn't for it 😂

You sound like you have similar style to me! I tried them on with a fitted vest tucked in and liked it so I imagine a bodysuit would look similar and I was also think white tee or navy tee but something fitted so I'm not too "baggy"

I wear thin knits tucked in.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 07/03/2025 21:48

Thanks all! These all sound really good and most of us seem to be on the same page!

I tried mine on in the shop with white trainers but not chunky more like a tennis shoe.

I have some chunky boots I will try them on with (like chunky Chelsea boots) but not sure how they will look.

Your silhouette needs one thin bit. If you hate being crunched in at the waist, a very long under the bum length poloneck also works cos your thin bit is your neck and head, if you see what I mean.

Chunky trainers excellent as long as the trousers are long enough to break on the tops. Too short can look try-hard but will reveal The Faintly Interesting Sock, the other compulsory outfit tweak.

To dress them down I’d go with a plain white t-shirt and white trainers. Maybe with a tank top/sleeveless jumper over if a bit chilly.

For a smarter lift reasonably fitted blouse with perhaps a statement collar like some of the Ganni ones suggested above and some pointed flats or boots.
