I’ve tried the phase 8 one and it’s very flattering and the colour is right. But it’s polyester. I’ve never bought a polyester dress before and am wondering if / why I should avoid it. It seems an unpopular choice of fabric on mumsnet. The alternative is the Boden one. Which do you prefer?

this one is silk. But maybe too bright.
I like the phase eight dress and prefer it to the boden one.
On Style and beauty there is always a huge range of tastes and you can’t please everyone. You look lovely in the dress and if it suits your own personal style you should wear it and feel good in it

TheGrimSmile · 05/03/2025 23:01

Both lovely. But Phase 8 one is nicest.

I’m 62 and think the Phase 8 one looks meh and doesn’t do you justice. This Self Portrait dress is reduced.

I love this, it's gorgeous.

I also like the original Boden dress and think it would look great on the OP.

@EBWhite I'm sorry that some of the comments have upset you. I think when people say it doesn't look good, they mean the dress itself and not you wearing it. You clearly have a gorgeous figure and can wear really beautiful things but that phase 8 dress just doesn't do anything for you.

I'm in my 40s too so it's not a 25 year olds opinion and I think the phase 8 dress is dreary and dated. If you wear it you will look lovely but you asked for opinions and you could absolutely get much nicer options that will make you feel amazing.

Mumofoneandone · 06/03/2025 08:44

I really like the phase 8 one, colour and styl. Like you I'm not a fan of polyester but will occasionally make an exception.
Also think the dress, with different accessories could be dressed up or down for future occasions. Always prefer to have a dress I can rewear in the future, than just suitable for a single day....

@EBWhite With your height and fabulous figure, you’ll look good in a sack. But it what you choose depends on your taste in “sacks” and what you feel most comfortable in.

The Boden dress looks badly cut (it doesn’t even fit the model well) so the Phase 8 is a better choice. I think the main reason why some people are criticising the Phase 8 dress is that it’s very conservative, traditional old style wedding outfit. If that’s what you like, go for it! But with such a good figure and being tall, you can carry off something much more fashion forward / fitted / out there (if you want to!)

Just to add a comment on the polyester front, it’s not always bad. I wear a lot of Issey Miyake Pleats Please (and always get lots of love from people for it) and that’s 100% polyester! I can’t believe how much I’m paying for that polyester that I usually sneer at! 😛😂🤦‍♀️

OP, I think you have a similar shape to me and while mostly I find it easy to get clothes, nice dresses can be hard - hanging off me because the bust doesn't fit right or the neckline gapes. I bet the Phase 8 dress is pinned to the model - I've tried loads in that silky look and they just don't work for me.

I was going to vote for the Phase 8 one until I saw you in it (gosh...that sounds awful...but you know what I mean!). I bet it's not cheap either.

ButIDontLikePeas · 06/03/2025 11:19

Love love love the Coggles one that @MrsJoanDanvers found but definitely order the Boden one to try, @EBWhite . I ordered one of their pink dresses last season and when it came, it was actually a slightly richer shade than the website showed. It was such a gorgeous colour. I suspect it isnt that flattering on me from a shape perspective, but I don't care because I love the colour so much, and having just finished my second mat leave, I haven't felt like that about a dress for a long long time.

MyGardenHasGreatTits · 06/03/2025 11:22

I like the Boden out of your two choices OP. Much prettier, youthful and can be dresses up for the wedding and down after.

Also LOVE the pink Self Portrait dress. Beautiful 💗

Jk987 · 06/03/2025 11:43

You are only 44 and with a great figure. You can do way better than those dresses. They are too safe and frumpy.

deffo phase 8!

Ariela · 06/03/2025 12:38

Have you looked in Hobbs? I always have managed to find something wedding-y suitable there.

Dollydaydream100 · 06/03/2025 16:53

I quite like them both - they are very "safe" but that's ok! I think the more punchy pink of the Boden one makes it less boring. But you look lovely in the phase 8 one in the pic x

theparticley · 07/03/2025 20:32

The phase 8 one looks lovely on you. Don’t overthink it and enjoy the wedding.
