Help me Dye my Hair for the first time!

I’ve got dark brown hair and I have never dyed it but the increasing grey means I would like to cover it up. I can’t afford a salon so need to use a box dye. What do I need- permanent/semi permanent? I want it to be like my natural hair colour.

Semi permanent will not cover the greys as well as a permanent colour. But for first greys a semi is a good place to start.
When I first started getting alot of grey I used L'Oréal casting cream gloss. It's a semi permanent and makes your hair shiny. It blends the grey rather than covers them but it's good if you have some first greys coming in you want to blend.

My hair got really grey after having kids (!) so I started using a permanent dye as it covers the greys a lot better rather than just masking them. I go to the hair dressers once a year because money is tight and inbetween I use a cheap swazkopft box dye from home bargains to cover just my roots.

Would videos on You Tube be useful. When I dyed my hair I used to get the permanent one. They lasted a lot longer than the semi permanent .They are much easier to use than years ago. Best of luck with choosing a lovely colour.

Go a shade or couple of shades lighter than your natural shade. Box dyes always come out darker in real life.

I'm in the same boat, started home dying about 4 years ago. I also use L'oreal castings and I'm very happy with it. I have long hair and find that I rarely need to do all of my hair so for the past 2 years I just do my roots leaving it on for 20/25 mins. It lasts 5-6 weeks before the grey reappears. I brought myself a brush as I find that easier to apply with rather than the bottle (I just use a yogurt pot to decant it into). I also buy nicer disposable gloves as I find the ones supplied don't fit me. Just take your time and use a towel you don't mind ruining!

I would recommend going into a Sallys shop and ask their advice. They will colour match to your existing colour, you bye the dye and peroxide to mix yourself.

So much better than the roulette you get with box dyes
