Wearing rings with gemstones on a daily basis - yes or no

Just seeking some advice before I make an expensive mistake!

I don’t have much jewellery and I have been looking for something I can wear every day. I think I would like a nice ring.

When I was married I had a small diamond ring that I wore every day and I don’t think I ever took it off. (Now divorced.) I have been looking at a lovely ring with different gemstones and I was planning to wear it every day except when cleaning etc. however, it has now occurred to me that this is probably not recommended as the gemstones may get damaged over time.

I have been looking at another ring that is plainer (no gemstones) and could I assume be worn daily but I don’t love it as much.

Before anyone suggests diamonds, the ring I love can be made just with diamonds but then it would be too expensive for me and also not as interesting in my opinion.

Any advice?

I have a sapphire ring and a topaz ring, both of which I wear every day without issue. I would just make sure the settings are secure!

I have a few nice rings with different gemstones. Some I bought and some were my Mums.
I wear them all the time, they are for wearing and I would rather risk losing them than never getting them out of their boxes

I have a coral ring that I wear on a regular basis after consulting an astrologer.

I only take it out when I'm making dough for example. For cleaning I use gloves.

It's been okay so far.

I had a sapphire set in my wedding ring but soap from hand washing would collect under the stone and irritate my skin. In the end I had it remade without the stone.

Talk to the jeweller about how much 'wear' the setting can take, some claw type settings are more likely to catch on things, and different metals wear differently so you might find it needs repairs to keep the stones secure. I only ever wear silver jewellery so my engagement ring was silver, with a central amethyst and smaller diamonds in claw settings and I wore it every day for 12 years without it losing a stone, only took it off for really mucky work like cleaning out the pond or scrubbing the oven. It's just got to the point of needing some minor repairs to the settings.

Thank you for the helpful relies!!

I will talk to the jeweller about it. Fortunately the setting if very secure (not claw).

I have a sapphire ring I wear most days, and it is really robust. It is made from one of my Mum's rings that got badly damaged (absolutely mangled the jeweller couldn't believethe state of it) the setting and side stones couldn't be repaired but the central stone was undamaged so after the insurance replaced the ring she had the stone reset for me.

Avoid Opal or pearl for daily use. Sapphire and Ruby will be fine, emerald is softer but still sturdy enough (I have one that is from WWII and has been worn regularly ever since). Consider amethyst as a cheaper option.

Yes, Sapphires and rubies are hard wearing stones.

I have about 9 rings set with stones I wear on a daily basis. I change them around wearing one on left hand ring finger, one on middle finger left hand and one on middle or ring finger right hand.

I don't wear a wedding ring or an engagement ring. On right hand I'm today wearing a Victorian ring set with 3 garnets and four tiny seed pearls, 3 of which I've lost but you don't really notice. I might get them replaced eventually.

On left hand, middle finger has a modern ring set with a diamond, an emerald an an amethyst and ring finger has a large Victorian acquamarine in a sort of filigree surround.

I have a Victorian diamond and opal ring which I've had for 30 years with no problems.

I have a gemstone engagement ring that I wear every day and it hasn't shown any damage. It's a stone people always say is too soft for everyday wear, but the ring is over 50 years old and doesn't show any signs of damage.

My wedding ring is an eternity ring with the same gemstone set in it and again it's in perfectly good condition after daily wear.

You can check the harness scale of gemstones. Rubies, sapphires and topaz are very hard and can be worn daily. Topaz comes in many different colours.

Which gemstones? Your jeweller should be able to advise on hardness.

I say go for it! You will love it
