Trendy but smart outfit for speaking at an event

I'm giving a talk at an event, it will be quite trendy and stylish. My normal attire for work is jeans and a casual top. I'd like to look smart and maybe a bit trendy but not corporate.

I'm 5'4 and size 18 to 20 with enormous boobs. Can't do heels or super flat shoes, a chunky boot or trainer is ok.

I had wondered about something like a trouser suit. Is that look dated?

Budget up to about £150 bonus points if I can wear the clothes again for everyday wear. Thank you!!!

I'd probably do wide legged trousers with a pointy boot (with a low heel), some sort of v neck top tucked in and a blazer. If you know what brands work for you, then there are loads of bargain blazers on Vinted, but I find they're one of the trickiest items to get the sizing right with, which is kind of reflected in the price.

Add nice earrings and belt. Personally I wouldn't wear a matching two piece suit as it would feel a bit too corporate, but that might just be me.

A plain lambswool sweater and rather smart denim skirt from

Community Clothing’s Curve range

would come to £162. With your own boots and accessories plus very good hair you’d look relaxed but authoritative.

Nothing wrong with a trouser suit - but you’d have to look for pre-owned if you want decent quality within your budget.

Have you got anything you already like, that you can use as a starting point?

What styles tend to suit you?

And how trendy do you mean? Like out there cutting edge fashion or "not something my granny might have worn"?

(Sorry - just to add, I’d choose a navy sweater and dark indigo denim skirt as the tonal look is both fashionable and looks like an ‘outfit’.)

Hi thank you for the suggestions, with my big boobs I'm not sure about the sweater and denim skirt suggestion but I like the idea of a blazer and trousers - trendy yes not cutting edge no, just not frumpy. I have literally nothing I like - in fact I have so few clothes it's laughable, combination of being skint and putting on weight in menopause:

Wide leg M&S trousers. Nice black form fitting top, blazer- farmers style or camel colour and boots with a small heel.

madamweb · 02/03/2025 22:41

My default for smart days is a simple black dress (well I have a few) and then one of the sort of hybrid jacket/cardigan things over the top. With either subtle or brighter jewellery depending on the jacket. My

Thanks yes good idea I like the idea of the wide trousers but do they suit short fat people? Black dress might be a useful thing to own.

Try Marks for a trouser suit. I got a nice one there last year, within your budget.
