Glowy skin

I am 54. I think I have quite good skin in terms of looking after it with cleanse, tone and moisturise. It just never looks bright and glowy. I am wary of using the term glowy as I don’t want to look sweaty but when I have make up on my skin looks flat if that makes sense. Is it vitamin c that would make it look a bit brighter?

Geek and gorgeous power peptides have made an amazing difference to my skin in just the short time I have been using them. Retinol does help too, and I do have Vit C in my moisturiser. However, I do feel my beauty regime is an awful faff these days, so you do have to ask yourself, is it worth it?
Cleanse, tone, moisturise was so much simpler, and a hell of a lot quicker!

festivemouse · 27/02/2025 07:06

Vitamin C can definitely help! I also think a good face mask - the Sunday Riley overnight jet lag mask is amazing - can really add hydration into the skin.

When you have makeup on, are you using flat products and a powder? That can contribute, I always have a glowy primer underneath + a very light foundation/BB cream, a light dusting of powder + highlighter and then a glowy setting spray. Adding products on top of your skin can definitely make it look matte / flat, so it sort of needs to be worked around.

Using Tretinoin and Korean products for hydration would definitely add glow. For make up, look at Glossier Futuredew, it gives a lovely glass skin effect either alone or under make up.

I'm 58 and have turned my skincare around during the past 2 months. It's really worked and my skin looks amazing.

Morning:
Cleanse, sometimes tone but not always, vitamin C serum, moisturiser, SPF 50
Nightime:
Cleanse, tretinoin (from skin and me), moisturise.

Now I'm in my routine it doesn't take long. Longest is leaving time between applying the tret and then moisturiser.

I've also bought myself some NARS light reflecting foundation which is bloody brilliant.

Vitamin A (tretinoin), Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) and Vitamin C tend to be most effective for skin brightening.

rumkar · 28/02/2025 04:24

Vitamin c and amino acids each morning helps.

RockStarMartini · 28/02/2025 06:01

I find this really hard to achieve with make-up - I got the Charlotte Tilbury glowy foundation stick and I just looked like I’d done a 10k run 🙄 I think skincare is your best bet, watching with interest.

BlackEyedFrozenPeas · 28/02/2025 06:36

I am 55

Tret, vit c and a good moisturiser

Makeup - I like Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood filter or flawless finish, Trinny London BB cream and whenever I use Trilogy Rosehip oil under my moisturiser I always get compliments about looking really healthy and glowy.

Just popping back to say thanks for the suggestions. I’ll take a proper read after dinner.

tret, acids (BHA, AHA) and Korean cosmetics. I have a proper glass skin and have stopped using foundation alltogether.

I am 61
Have been using Tret for 6 weeks and cannot believe how great my skin looks. It is too soon for noticeable reduction in wrinkles, but my complexion looks fantastic, really glows. Highly recommend.

Where do you get tret from?

This setting spray, sometimes I use it without makeup, as it really brightens my skin.

Plus The Ordinary bits and bobs.

The dermatology pharmacies sell it for about £25 a tube. Check out Monderma, Dermatica etc.

A good simple skincare routine is:

Cleanse (double cleanse if removing make up)
Acid Tone (if you are looking to brighten dull skin) pixi has a good range of toning pads
Treat (so a serum/vitamin etc)
moisturise
SPF (AM)

Vit C should be in the morning routine, Vitamin A (so retinols/tret) in the evening. Do not use Vit A without a decent stand alone spf. Allow enough time for each product to settle on the skin before adding the next. If your skin is not used to Retinols, start off slowly (3 x pw) to avoid damaging your skin barrier. Have La Roche Posay cicaplast balm on stand by in case you get a reaction.

Try and use stand alone products that have the active ingredient rather than a ‘one for all’ as you’ll get more targeted results. The ordinary or The inkey list is good for this. Necks and eyes need specific products as the skin is more delicate in those areas. I’m in my 50’s so use wrinkle-reducing products for my neck such as Prai or Strivectin.

Once a week I do some sort of peel/mask routine over an hour or so to give my skin a boost. The Ordinary AHA solution is good for that followed by a hydration mask from Clarins/elemis.

My makeup looks best after using a dewy finish setting spray.

Hope that helps a bit!

I couldn't get on with tret but do use a retinal (medik8). I also use vitamin C in the mornings.

However the things that are topical which have made the most difference to glow are: a facial lotion ( I use Suqqu Aquafons which is expensive but brilliant) and a glowy sunscreen. I have found Supergoop glow screen to be the best.

Glow is also important to me as I have dry menopausal skin.

Oh and Avene Cicalfate+ . Perfect to use with tret.

Supergoop Glowscreen also do a tinted version now. It's excellent.

I use the Elemis Superfood Glow Primer for a subtle glow after a good skincare routine. It doesn’t make me shiny but a bit more glowing.
