What do you hang up and what do you fold

I don't have a huge amount of clothes or storage, but I'm trying to reorganise a little and carve out a little more room.

What do you hang up in the wardrobe

Eg. Hoodies don't need hanging up but take up too much drawer space.

Tops? Folded or hung?

Dresses hung up obviously.

I have one chest of drawers and one double wardrobe to play with

Hung up
Dresses
Blouses & Shirts
Trousers
Jackets
Skirts

Folded in drawers
T shirts
Tops
Jumpers
Jeans

GrandHighPoohbah · 23/02/2025 13:34

My general rule is fold tops and hang bottoms. I do hang shirts but I don't have very many.

StarlightLady · 23/02/2025 13:34

If it will hang, l hang it. Knickers, bras, socks, stockings, tights get screwed up rather than folded if the truth be told.

Cuppachuchu · 23/02/2025 13:37

I also do 1 in 1 out, so when I buy
a new jumper, I put an old jumper in the charity bag. Obvs not with underwear.

GetMyAgentOnThePhone · 23/02/2025 13:40

Everything gets hung up except nightwear, vests / tops to wear under jumpers and gym kit. I have 4 wardrobes and just two chest of drawers.

TheOGCCL · 23/02/2025 13:41

Hang tops, fold bottoms (unless formal wear).

Gravytanned · 23/02/2025 13:52

Dresses, smart or easily creased trousers and shirts are hung.
T-shirts, sweatshirts, knitwear, sports wear and jeans are folded.

We store everything folded so it's all visible which keeps drawers tidier.

DelphiniumBlue · 23/02/2025 14:36

If I had the room I'd hang everything; I think it's much easier to see what you've got.
But I have quite a lot of clothes, and don't have enough wardrobe space.
So I have a single hanging space for dresses, and then a short double row for tops ( tshirts, jumpers, hoodies, shirts, cardigans, sweatshorts) and smart trousers. Jeans go on 2 shelves ( blue and black) and leggings, vests, nightclothes and underwear go in drawers. Belts and slips hang from hooks inside the wardrobe doors. Boots go on the floor of the wardrobe.
Seasonal clothes not in use are stored under the bed. Coats and jackets go on a rail by the front door, with scarves, gloves and hats hanging from small fabric shelves on that rail.

I hang dresses, shirts/blouses, skirts, jackets/coats and smart or easily creased trousers.
I fold all my jumpers/cardies, tees, sportswear, jeans, leggings and casual trousers like cords or cargos.
(undies and pjs are in drawers).

Hedgesgalore · 23/02/2025 17:05

Folded:-

Jeans
Joggers
Leggings
Pjs
Tennis skirts
Underwear (in 3 separate tubs)

I have no chest of drawers, so the folded things are on the shelves in their tubs in my walkin wardrobe

Everything else is on those flocked hangers as they give me more space. Mine are organised according to colour but I have one whole wardrobe which is just for blue/navy (have far too many clothes which I am trying to declutter)

My summer clothes are in a different wardrobe.

outofofficeagain · 23/02/2025 19:09

Well that was satisfying.

I have folded
Underwear (screwed up)
T-shirts and pyjamas
Jumpers
Casual Trousers
Gym kit

I have hung up
Dresses
Smart trousers
Shirts
Tops that aren't t-shirts
Cardigans (that go with dresses)
Scarves.

😇

Every time l hear the term walk-in wardrobe, l always get the giggles thinking of a walking wardrobe on legs 😀. Sorry to digress.

As a general rule I hang up anything that needs to remain uncreased and fold anything that either doesn't crease or doesn't matter.
This means I don't have too much hanging space in use and have more folded on shelves in the wardrobe - I prefer that way.

redstripestar · 23/02/2025 22:43

I think folding small items takes up less space - long sleeve tops that aren't t-shirts - I generally fold these unless they are pure cotton. I have a hanging shelf on my rail.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 23/02/2025 23:15

Majority of tops, blouses, shirts, dresses, trousers, skirts, shorts hung along with heavy knitwear, jackets and coats. Anything wool, silk or delicate covered in a zipped clear hanging bag. Jackets and coats live in a separate wardrobe.

Folded - jeans, t-shirts, bodysuits, nightwear, sweatshirts, sweaters and cardigans in either drawers or on shelves. Gym/swimwear too. All knitwear kept in ziplock bags due to paranoia about moths. Socks and lingerie also in drawers. Accessories are boxed, as are bags and shoes, and kept on shelves.

jay55 · 23/02/2025 23:18

Hoodies I hang on a coat rack.
Wardrobe hang dresses, jeans and trousers.
Everything else is in drawers.
