Has anyone had Botox for teeth grinding?

What helped you decide to try Botox?
What were the results like?

Did it work? And if so....
How often do you have it done?

Any other other thoughts on it to share or things I should read or know ?

I had not heard of Botox as a treatment for teeth grinding before so just doing some research!

I was thinking about it but then I saw a video online of a woman in her twenties who had developed noticeable jowls from doing it. She was devastated. Put me off completely.

mummymissessunshine · 23/02/2025 02:40

Oh gosh. Not heard of that!

Have you actually seen your dentist about this?
Mouthguards can help , as can mindfulness , yoga, meditation etc as mostly teeth grinding is not a disease itself it is a symptom of stress. Ironically some antidepressants can make grinding worse.

Botox can be a useful therapy for grinding in some cases but it needs to be given by an expert in oral anatomy ie a dentist qualified in Botox for fpgrinding , not just a beautician , or even a nurse .

some people find a one off is enough , most find it needs redoing every 6 months but there is a point at which is becomes counterproductive to keep on , and getting it wrong can also cause many problems.

See a dentist and , if necessary, get referred to a dentist who treats a lot of bruxers (people who grind teeth) .

Magnesium tablets stopped my teeth grinding completely

AnnaMagnani · 23/02/2025 16:39

Mouthgard protected my teeth but I just carried on grinding which gets expensive in mouth guards.

Jaw Botox has really helped me, my face is relaxed and doesn't hurt all the time, my teeth don't hurt, my face has gone back to being a normal shape.

Very happy with it.

rubiesthatigaveup · 23/02/2025 16:43

Regular gua shaing the masseter muscle (I keep the stone next to the TV), and occasional osteopath when I have a flair up works for me (he will sometimes do acupuncture and that helps). But I think I'm more clenching than grinding and am not seeing any problems with my teeth.

mummymissessunshine · 23/02/2025 18:26

Thanks @AnnaMagnani
Yes I often have a sore face in the day and it got much worse when I started adhd treatment.

When I stopped the treatment i was still aware of having a sore face!!!

I think I will talk to a face doctor or dentist who deals with Bruxxers.

Concerts and Ritalin are associated with bruxing as are other medications used to treat ADHD.

A doctor will not be able to help with bruxing, except to change any medications. You need to see a dentist.

Thethruththewholetruth · 23/02/2025 19:12

I have had it many times on the NHS, took a while of backwards and forwards but I have a wonderful professor that did it in the end. Had it done every 3 months for 2/3 years and then I just stopped, it was life changing, honestly the pain I was in was horrific in the end. The headaches were ruining my life! Go for it, just make sure you get a professional. I am in the midlands, if you are in that area the lady that did mine also does private work.

sausagedogpookie · 24/02/2025 03:34

@Thethruththewholetruth please could you dm me who you saw in the midlands for this? My daughter may need it and I only want it done by someone who is an expert in it,so a recommendation (so that I could arrange a consultation in the first instance) would be wonderful, please. Thank you.

Unfortunately I think it is something I have always done but only became apparent when I was on meds.

And. Now I am conscious of it. Despite no longer being on meds.

Can a doctor not Offer Botox for this? I thought there was a head and neck doctor specialism who would be best placed for this?

I know I grind at night. As DH has mentioned it. And years ago I even woke myself up doing it!!!

I think I clench during the day tho..... hence the sore face at the end of the day!!!!

Did you have the Botox treatment to ease it? Or try something else?
And where did you go?

Thank you for this. Sadly not in the midlands!
What side of doc did you see? What was their specialism?

Sorry to hijack but how did you get this done on the NHS?
I tried it and could feel the difference but had to pay privately and can't afford to continue with it.
I was referred to a maxillofacial doctor but he said jaw clenching was not causing my headaches.
I am convinced it is!

Thethruththewholetruth · 26/02/2025 17:48

I saw an Oral and maxillofacial specialist who did this. The GP referred me to them. It took a while of a few appointments back and forwards but when I saw her she just agreed to it and said it works wonders, and it did. I did try to PM her details to the lady that asked but they have turned PM off? She works for the NHS and for Nuffield health privately too.

frogpigdonkey · 26/02/2025 17:58

I've also had it done by an oral and facial specialist as noted. Two appointments, quite light doses so as not to overdo it and a check in and top up later. Worked brilliantly and I didn't need any further treatments as once I'd stopped doing it my body didn't seem to need it any more, if it returned as an issue I'd definitely do it again. I was referred by my dentist and saw someone privately. It was expensive.

onwardsup4 · 26/02/2025 20:32

I've had it twice and found it brilliant, had over developed jaw muscles on one side and tooth damage. My face went back to a normal shape and it stopped the grinding. I think it's been about a year since I've had it and am slightly feeling the urge to grind again, looking to get some more soon.

Pianoaholic · 26/02/2025 20:38

I had two lots of it, I was referred to a maxillofacial consultant who did it. I had tried mouthguards which didn't seem to work, and was prescribed naproxen and amytriptaline which I didn't really want to keep taking.
This was about 5 years ago, and if it does flare up these days, it's much less painful than the first time, which was agonising.
Good luck with it, it can be a nasty thing to have to deal with.

Thank you for trying to dm me @Thethruththewholetruth! I’ve checked and for some reason,my account says private messages are disabled even though in my settings,it says they are not and I’ve never turned them off? I’ll see if I can contact admin to sort it out!

@Thethruththewholetruth hi,admin have now sorted the dm/private messaging issue. Sadly, all my dm’s (inbox and outbox) have been wiped as a result,so I’ve nothing in there from you.😭

Please, please could you send me the details of the Oral Maxillofacial doctor you went to for your masseter treatment in the East Midlands? 🙏🏻

thank you so much!

SapporoBaby · 27/03/2025 04:07

I stopped grinding by getting Invisalign and then a retainer. My jaw has slimmed out massively and my teeth don’t hurt.

Knitily · 27/03/2025 06:26

I saw a specialist dentist - I had a wisdom tooth removed which was impacting how my jaw was sitting, and tried several different mouth guards. This all helped me managed the grinding somewhat but after a year of still struggling with face pain and headaches I got Botox. I just had it one time but it helped so much - like a reset for the muscles. I do still grind occasionally but not all the time and the headaches and face pain is not every day.
