Leaving do, what to wear????

I need help, I’ve got a leaving do coming up, and I'm struggling with an outfit. I feel fat and that I’ll look fat in whatever I wear.
any outfit suggestions?
I am particularly bothered by my fat arms, belly and legs.

We probably need a little more context. What sort of thing is the do? Are you a dress sort of person or more jeans/trousers and a top?Any particular colours or styles that you like or dislike?

Sorry, reading that back you’re completely right.
I’m early 40’s, more of a smart casual preference. I’ve got god awful legs so they’re never on show. It’s always jeans and a top or long skirt, dress with opaque tights.
Id say it’s a smart casual kind of do, I’ve got some knee high black boots that are nice, but would I look ridiculous in skinny jeans with those boots and a long sleeve top?

We need a lot more context about the leaving do. I don't think in all the 40 plus years I've worked I've specifically dressed up for a leaving do, my own or anyone else's.

What would you wear to go to a restaurant or a pub?

Go with the outfit that makes you feel at your most confident and relaxed.

Grin @Wherestheinstructions we have no idea if ‘feeling fat’ means a size 14 or 24 - and it makes a difference as to where you can shop.

I’m not keen on the knee high boots and skinny jeans look outside of a field - so I’d favour a great skirt and jumper to complement the boots. Do you have those or are you looking to buy something new?

Hard to tell as you haven’t mentioned a budget.

I’m a size 14 possibly spilling into a 16 depending on fit/brand, the leaving do is in a golf club, like a hired function room, so not formal dress.
I do have a satin skirt and nice jumper, I’ve worn that before with the same group of people unfortunately, it’s a dark khaki green with a black jumper. Looked nice on.
I think I’d like to go for a dressy jeans and top, I’ve seen a nice long sleeve top on saint and Sofia

You haven’t asked - but it would be a lot to spend on something so cheap looking …

Perhaps I didn’t ask directly, but this is exactly what I’m looking for, I need direct opinions, so thank you.
I'm open to any suggestions I’d rather not spend a huge amount, say a budget £50-70?

If you liked the skirt you wore before why don't you wear that and change the top ? Maybe for a satin shirt ?
People won't remember the skirt !
Satin looks polished and luxe but is comfortable.
Or some black wider leg trousers and a satin shirt ?

MsWintertowne · 21/02/2025 10:27

Okay. I would avoid black at that price. And also it’s just about to be Spring and it’s nice to acknowledge the change of season in your clothes. (Maybe not on a freezing commuter train in the pouring rain, but if you’re dressing up a bit.)

This is a little over budget but very versatile (and partly a natural fabric). Wonderfully shapely with jeans:

Stories top

I love this but you might not. Again, something you could wear for any ‘out’ occasion for ever and a million times more contemporary than the S&S garment you linked:

Cos top

For price balance - this is gorgeous and partly cotton:

H&M top

(The last is on the Collagerie site, which is brilliant at curating new stuff.)

There are other issues here. I'm mainly a 14 or possibly a 16. I jokingly say to my husband that "I'm fat" because in the past I've been as slim as a 4 but being a 14 or a 16 doesn't stop me enjoying clothes or being unable to find more fabulous clothes than I have money or sense.

Why can't you wear something that you've worn before? Obviously I'm not saying buy something new if you actually want something new.

They are fab. I think I like the Cos one best but it's a tough call.

I often see "jeans and a nice top" suggested on here and think (a) what the hell does that mean and/or (b) no, it isn't.
