Can I wear a vest top?

No insults please - I'm insecure enough as it is!

I'm a size 20 with a big chest, would it be totally obscene for me to wear a vest top out in public (not a really stringy spaghetti strap one, just normal)? I'm not talking bare midriff and, with footballers' legs I don't go shorter than mid-calf cropped trousers but I'm sooooooo hot with sleeves on and carting round a 17 week old wriggly hot water bottle girl-child doesn't help. Please tell me I don't have to get changed to leave the house.

You can do what you like.
Whether it is a pretty sight is another matter.
If you are a firm in proportion size 20, then why not?

Piffle · 09/05/2008 21:05

if you feel comfy do it. My cleaner is an 18 and short and wears spaghetti ones with like a linen shirt over.
I am big busted and slim but am way too self conscious and wear t shirts. Think I've got ishoos though!!!!

I think that the most important thing is to buy one that fits and that you feel comfortable in, then wear it with pride!

I was a size 18 last year and am now a size 10, and I still can't bring myself to wear vest tops. I deffo have issues. I think if you fake tan your upper arms and shoulders, that would help. Nice tanned arms with vest tops always look better. And a nice posture. No rounded shoulders.

EyeballsintheSky · 09/05/2008 21:13

Hmm, I've found some nice ones that aren't clingy and have decent width straps so none of that bra strap malarky. I only ever wear them round the house usually but I felt brave this afternoon and went to supermarket.

I don't think I'm ever going to look great in them but I don't want people to actually vomit. Also don't want to be stereotypical pasty overweight person with flesh hanging out so will only consider if good fit.

Celery.. how on earth did you manage that?

Eyeball - wear what makes you feel comfortable/cool - get a good bra and sod em I say.

Celery · 09/05/2008 21:16

I went on a diet

It took a good long year and 3 and a half stone, yet I STILL feel self conscious and unable to get to grips with summer clothes.

brimfull · 09/05/2008 21:18

fuckit

lizandlulu · 09/05/2008 21:23

i am a size 18 and have just lost a stone. i was a 22 and still wore vest tops. i hate wearing tops with sleeves when it is warm.
i work outside and in summer wear them everyday. i get work ones form bon marche (dont laugh) they are about £3, wash really well and have thick straps.

BrassicaNapusNapobrassica · 09/05/2008 21:23

I was thinking about vest tops today. Regardless of dress size, I don't think you can wear them well unless you are upper body toned. A size 10 friend of mine was wearing one today and it didn't do her any favours tbh - and she's gorgeous. But 44 years taketh their toll. On the other hand my sister, who's 48 and a size 12, looks great in them still (she does live in the gym mind you, so there is a price!)

EyeballsintheSky · 09/05/2008 21:38

That's the sort of thing, ggirl. Upper body toned eh? Hmmm, I'll get me jumper then...

Sorry for hijack but size 18 to 10 in a year is brilliant.
Celery which diet?

Eyeballs..a vest underneath a lightweight/sheer crinkle or cotton shirt maybe?

Divastrop · 09/05/2008 21:59

i have ishoos with wearing a vest top as i have stretch marks on my arms from when i used to be a size 20(7 years ago),also loose skin from when i went from a 20 to a 12 in 9 months(v.bad crash diet not good).i have been doing toning excersises for the last 5 months and they still look awful(i am a size 12 again now although ive had 3 more children and been everything from an 8 to a 16 in the past 5 years).i have come to the conclusion that i would rather be cool than worry what i look like, and if they are exposed i will get a tan and they will look better eventually anyway.

Celery · 10/05/2008 12:27

Thanks Unicorn. It was WW online, taking up running, and then more recently, having glandular fever!

Yes, vest tops are not ideal in the sun as you can so easily get sunburnt if you're at all light-skinned.

I think they look ok as long as they're long, so cover wobbly bellies, and as long as your arms aren't bad. Obviously they look best with arms that have some definition.

zippitippitoes · 10/05/2008 13:00

i have a vest top on under a tshirt with three quarter sleeves

i could potentially take the t shirt off

but like celery not sure about that

i have a bra with showable straps i think

but having gone from being big to similarly a lot less i am cautious

tho my uper arms are actually one of my better features age is aginst me

mumblechum · 10/05/2008 17:28

I'm a 12/14 and don't wear vest tops in public, but do in the garden. My arms are really flabby and I just don't think it's attractive.

I do sometimes wear sheer shirts over which cover my arms but they're q. hard to find.

ahundredtimes · 10/05/2008 17:34

Right, I'm just going to come out and say it.

No, I don't think you should wear a vest top.

There.

I think you should wear lovely cool kaftan top, with long or three quarter sleeves. Will be just as cool, you'll avoid upper arm burning and hotness - and it'll look better.

[Though actually of course you can wear what the hell you want too]

giggly · 10/05/2008 21:26

Go ahead, lets face it we only look at one another for a nanosecond think insulting/envious thoughts and then carry on with our own lives.
I am a size 18 and wear anything that I want, within reason. H&M do really good vests with wide shoulder straps, long and not clingy. Honestly who wants to look hot in restrictive clothes.
So, we may have bingo wings but what about all the people who have no style.
Go forth and be cool!
