Will my dark hair go orange if I colour it blonde?

I'm very dark brown with maybe 30% streaks of grey. I have thick wavy frizzy hair which I tame with products but it's prone to drink hair colour where it's so porous so if I put even a non permanent lighter brown to blend the grey it comes out jet black and I look terrible with black hair.

I would like to go lighter but I don't want to look orange. Blonde would be nice but is that achievable at home?
I'm on maternity leave and feel washed out don't have a lot of money and don't want to make a terrible mistake.

In short, yes. If you can’t afford to go to a professional right now, leave it dark.

I wouldn't go from dark brown to blonde at home. I've tried once and snapped my hair off 🙈 people will tell you it can be done but from my experience it's a job for the professionals. Last time I did it I had foils at the hairdressers and did it gradually, I hate going to the hairdressers though but sometimes needs must.

That's what I thought, I wasn't thinking of using bleach as such but a blonde box colour straight on. My mum used to do this but only once she was completely grey and it looked nice.
I'm almost wishing my hair would hurry up and be all grey.

Yes it's definitely going to go orange. It would require bleach to lift it, before putting a colour/toner on it.

Don't do it. Color correction is very expensive

Hannah1011 · 18/02/2025 15:01

How much would you say a professional would charge?

EcruCardigan · 18/02/2025 15:04

Go for a slightly lighter colour than your natural colour.
A drastic change in colour might not suit you, and is best left to a professional.

I haven't looked into it but I know with the upkeep it'll be more than I want to commit to at the moment.

So, I am trying to achieve a honey coloured balayage! My hair was very dark and so it was going to be a ball ache! I paid for the first kit of colour correction in December - was £236, that took out all the very dark colour and left me quite 'reddish'! Then, last week I was back for roots and some blending, that was £127. The next session is roots & putting some foils in and I don't know how much that will be yet!

I tried to achieve this once before, at home with a blonde dye. My hair looked, felt and was the worst it has ever been and I will never make that mistake ever again!

If you're going to do something drastic to your hair let the professionals do it properly!

Box blonde won't lift your hair.
Highlights would be best, done at a salon. If money is tight is there a beauty college or a salon that has classes on that you could get it done professionally but a lot cheaper.

I actually bleach my hair white blonde (from dark brown with grey) at home. I have ten years of home colouring experience though and the only bleach that works on my dark hair is Bleach London or Schwarzkopf BlondeMe. You need 30 developer to lift hair as dark as yours and mine and it’s mega damaging. Your hair will snap. Or if you only use a blonde box dye, this can’t lift.

You also need to use professional grade toner after bleaching. It’ll be about £20 per month for bleach and toner. However, I really don’t recommend it unless you’ve done your own hair a lot. I also use a clear cap over my hair to make it bleach more evenly and I use a 360 mirror to get all the angles. I use special coconut shampoo, conditioner and oil. It’s a lot of additional money for all that. I’ve had to spend over £100 on the kit to do it right. Maybe you should just find a hairdresser.

Oh god please don’t do that! The results will be absolutely horrendous and a colour correction would cost you at least twice what you would spend if you went to a hairdresser in the first place.
