Should I buy an epilator?

If you've used one, can you tell me?

  1. How much does it hurt?
  2. Does it leave your legs feeling smooth or just looking smooth?
  3. How long does it take to do both half legs? I've seen product reviews that say up to half an hour which seems ridiculously long!
  4. What should I look for/avoid?

Please help! Can't be arsed to shave my legs every couple of days, but want to wear skirts in the summer.

Hurts like hell, my mum uses one and assures me it gets better and easier, but when i tried i gave up half way because so painful and took so long, much more painful than wax imo

  1. How much does it hurt? - YES but less so han waxing IMO
  1. Does it leave your legs feeling smooth or just looking smooth? Deffo feeling smooth. Is teh same as waxing
  1. How long does it take to do both half legs? I've seen product reviews that say up to half an hour which seems ridiculously long! My tree trunks take about 20-30mins to do properly. YOu only need to do every 4wks or so. It is like waxing.
  1. What should I look for/avoid? Dunno mine is over 10years old so don't know what to look for on the newer models.

Some pointers...I only ever do my legs, bikini, armpits etc. far far too painful. You also end up red an bltchy for a couple of hours later so don't do it immediately before heading to the beach.

Yes, it hurts! Especially at first before you get used to it. You won't be able to remove the really short hairs, so you'll need to do another "sweep" a week later once they're long enough. And it does take a while to do both full legs properly.

I still use one though, because all that waxing really adds up in terms of cost and because it's impossible (in my experience) to get waxed properly with a lively toddler in tow! And I really like not having the horrible MrsTiggyWinkle legs if you miss a day or two of shaving.

It's brilliant!! I tried years ago and gave up because it hurt too much. Last year I decided that if I had given birth twice I could bloody well use an epilator!!!

Did mine this morning (half legs) and it took about ten minutes with honestly no pain at all. You have to grit your teeth the first time and it just gets better.

Legs feel smooth for about a week, after that you can feel hairs but they look smooth IYKWIM?

I now also have a few patches where the hair has stopped growing altogether.

SlightlyMadSweet · 09/05/2008 14:00

Actually IMO it does get teh really short hairs. You can certainly epilate before you can wax. I have more problems with long hairs snapping causing me to redo a week or so later.

MrsTittleMouse · 09/05/2008 14:00

I do epilate my armpits, by the way, but the hairs there are weakened by years of waxing and are much sparser than they used to be. I would not recommend underarms or bikini for the novice. My epilator is also ancient, so I have no idea which modern models are any good.

SlightlyMadSweet · 09/05/2008 14:01

Agree with Sniffy hock.

My hairs were much much finer and sparser after a year or 2's use during the smuuer months.

Thanks ladies

one tip is don't let the hairs get too long or else i find the epilator breaks them rather than pull them!

the first time i used mine, i had to do it in stages, half a leg every couple of days, it was so painfull, but i persevered! it takes me about 30 mins now, i'm kinda gritting my teeth towards the end, but i'm the same with waxing and this is cheaper!

cold packs can help with the pain, mine came with one to stick in the freezer and use on the leg 1st... i always forget that bit though!

They are great - first time using them after shaving for a while will really hurt though! I reccomend waxing first and then switching to epilator, or doing a home wax and tidying up any missed areas with the epilator.
