Handbags for a 70yr old

Looking for recommendations on bags to suit a 70yr old lady? Everyday use.

Quietnowplease · 16/02/2025 20:22

Budget? £50 or £500?

What's her style? Where does she usually shop?

Bignanna · 16/02/2025 20:32

Does a 70year old lady have a special type of bag, then?

Lovemybunnies · 16/02/2025 20:36

I think size and weight are worth considering. I know my DM in her 70s doesn’t like anything which is too heavy.

B1indEye · 16/02/2025 20:39

I'm not seventy but dont think I'll change the type of handbag I like when I am that age.

What style does she already have?

Wilma55 · 16/02/2025 20:46

I'm that age and like a cross body bag as less easy to snatch.

heldinadream · 16/02/2025 20:58

And yes I would say my taste in a bag is different now to what it was when I was younger. More timeless, more elegant, less frivolous, security conscious a priority. At the moment I'm still not really bothered by the weight of a bag but I can see that becoming a consideration. I do, though, want enough room in it for all my gubbins. Not too small!
Cross body is a good shout but if a bag has a long strap I'll wear it cross body anyway if necessary even if it isn't one. So the strap is important.

travelmadmum23 · 16/02/2025 21:12

I was thinking along these lines. She currently buys very basic black or navy bags, medium size with a strap rather than handles. Always over shoulder, never cross body.

Get this one then?

Lovely. Isn't it eye-wateringly expensive?
If that's what you want to get and think she'll like that's fine obviously!
Personally I'd hate anyone to spend that on a bag for me, especially if I thought something a tenth or twentieth of the price was just as good!
I'd happily spend that on plants and books though...😂

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 16/02/2025 21:33

Like others I'm not seeing what the significance of being 70 is. You know the style of bag she likes.

Yes, hence why I was asking for recommendations based on her age group etc from a practical point of view and if anybody knew of any gems 😂

I think she will google the bag, realise the price and then "save it for good".

From a practical point of view which is fairly self explanatory I.e - not too heavy etc.

Don't take offence where there is none.

70 isn't old

70 doesn't require a special type of bag

70 could have the exact same bag as a 30 year old

It's down to her particular taste

And who in earth saves a bag for good ?

I think what you're saying is this person is old fashioned and what would suit a person who's mentally stuck in the 1950's perhaps. Or is this what you think of them ? I can't quite work out

KittenPause · 16/02/2025 21:44

It seems what OP thinks is self explanatory is not so for your average 70 year old.

90 maybe but not 70

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 16/02/2025 21:48

I'm 65 and 3/4. I don't like that bag. It's too small, a bit fussy and I don't like the logo. I prefer cross body bags or proper Queen Mum style over the forearm bags.

I'd easily spend that on a dress or a coat, or a pair of good boots, which I absolutely wouldn't keep for good. Does your mother want a new bag?

Gulbekian · 16/02/2025 21:49

I don't have a specific bag suggestion but my 70+ year old colleague has recently remarked that she increasingly values a bag with plenty of pockets rather than one compartment as she finds she forgets things more and a quick pat of the pockets helps her quickly check that she has everything she needs.

I (mid 50s) find I'm also now tending towards bags with a lighter coloured interior/lining as it makes individual items easier to see as my eyesight changes.

connachtgobragh · 16/02/2025 21:50

I'm not quite there yet, but for everyday I like a medium size leather cross body bag. I like my hands free. For dressy occasions, I use proper old fashioned framed bags with a top clasp and shorter handles. I like the formality of them.

waltzingparrot · 16/02/2025 21:52

I work in a shop that sells handbags. The 70+ age group always want bags with lots of zips/pockets.

She had a clear out recently and mentioned the bag she currently has is a touch on the small side, she carried quite a bit of stuff, diary, phone, purse, tissues, gloves etc etc.. Its her 70th birthday so I thought I'd buy her a good quality bag as opposed to the sainsbury/Asda one she currently has.

She never wears it crossbody or over the forearm as you say however I could look for one that can be worn multiple ways, and then she has the option.

I'll take a look at coach - maybe they will have something.

If the Loewe would get saved for best, get a better version of what she already likes and uses.

That's quite a few people mentioning cross body so I'll going to take a look at ones to be worn multiple ways. Thank you
