Brad Mondo is convincing me I can cut my own hair

Is this a terrible idea?!

I have bra strap length hair, with some long layers and grown out side bangs. I'm fed up of going to the hair dresser, showing pictures of the hair style I'd love, paying £50 and coming out looking nothing like how I wanted to! I love the butterfly style cut, lots of lovely face framing layers. Every time I get layers that are really long, so when I style it it adds no body whatsoever.

Watching several Brad Mondo hair tutorials has convinced me I could do this myself, but knowing my luck it would be a complete disaster and I'd have to do the walk of shame into a hairdressers.

Is it a terrible idea? I'd start small first, just trimming the ends and cutting the side bangs (they are well past my chin now) and if it's not terrible move on to the butterfly cut.

I did a Brad mondo fringe (bangs) I think you can absolutely do it OP!

I am tempted myself but trying to hold on for a trip to the salon.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 15/02/2025 17:50

Go for it. I am now convinced I'm a professional hairdresser because of Brad (have never actually tried any of his tutorials though 🙃)

JudgeBread · 15/02/2025 17:52

I've been cutting my own hair for a decade and it's completely fine (and if you ever do fuck it up it'll grow out!). Just get some sharp as fuck scissors and go for it!

Also I love Brad Mondo he's adorable

Bananaram · 15/02/2025 17:52

@Waisted this is what I want to hear! I would suck it up and go to a hairdresser if I had someone who I know would give me what I want but every time I leave disappointed. I can't afford to keep trying different people to find the one for me!

Did you buy expensive hairdressing scissors? I was looking at them in Superdrug and thinking at least they are better than kitchen scissors, but maybe the cheap ones won't be that good?

I've done my hair a few times varying success but no disasters. I will say I have wavy/thick hair which I think is more forgiving, if you have poker straight hair I would think twice.

I got hairdressing scissors from Amazon, only about a tenner but seem to be good enough.

Definitely stick to just taking a little bit of length at a time, you can always cut more but not less!

MonaChopsis · 15/02/2025 17:59

I did this for about 5 years when I was broke as fuck, post divorce. It was fine, but not great... Layers were not feathered as well as they should be, etc etc. Once finances improved, I hot footed it back to a hairdresser.

Best recommendation I can give is to approach people on the street with great haircuts, compliment them, and ask them who cuts their hair... I have always found excellent hairdressers that way.

henlake7 · 15/02/2025 18:01

Dont do it if bad haircuts traumatise you but if you generally think 'meh...its only hair, it'll grow back!' then go for it!

(I always cut mine but then a blunt bob with fringe on thin hair is hard to mess up!).

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/02/2025 18:05

Looks like it's the standard MN haircut of a decade ago to save on hairdresser costs. Problems only arose when somebody got a bit too enthusiastic and ended up with a weird chunk of hair at the front and something mullet like at the back.

Out of interest, how long did it take for your hair to grow from just below your ears to its current length?

Waisted · 15/02/2025 18:06

I just used my kitchen scissors as I am pretty impulsive and it wasn’t planned at all.

Just to add - I am of the opinion that it’s only hair, it will grow back, if this isn’t you then don’t do it.

TheLionandAlbert · 15/02/2025 18:08

I only get a proper haircut once a year. (It’s a schlep to get to my hairdresser and it costs almost £200.)

The rest of the time, I trim it myself. But my hair is long and curly, so it’s very forgiving.

Tiggi7 · 15/02/2025 18:08

I always cut my own hair, and it definitely passes as acceptable. I do have slightly wavy hair which definitely hides a multitude of sins. It probably wouldn't look great straight.

Missionimprobable · 15/02/2025 18:09

I've finally found my tribe!!!
I love Brad Mondo 😍
Definitely do it, pull one of his videos up and pause it at each part.
Like you say, start by not cutting too much off, if it looks like it's going to work, cut a little more.
I'm actually excited for you.
I've got a chin length bob, if my hair was longer I'd definitely try it,
Post a before and after photo

Not been to a hairdressers since lockdown, my hair is straight just above back bra straps, I trim the back by bringing it forwards over shoulders, for layers I sort of do half head pony on top of head and cut a little off, I watch so many how to cut your own hair videos, haven't done the pony cut where you pull all the hair to the forhead as my hair is so straight I wonder how it will look,

TrappedPotato · 15/02/2025 18:20

I've been doing the butterfly cut for about a year now. I love it - saves money and looks good. I say go for it!

Bananaram · 15/02/2025 18:20

To be honest I wouldn't be devastated if it didn't work out, I'd probably then go to the hairdresser and get it chopped off to my shoulders (seems to be my pattern of growing it long, getting bored and then getting loads of it chopped off!)

I'm not too sure how long it took to grow, maybe 2 and a half years? It's got a slight wave but I always blow dry it straight as left to dry naturally it goes really frizzy on the ends!

I do the Brad Mundo/ MN hair cut and it’s fine. I also have curly hair though so it doesn’t really matter if it’s not perfect!

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 15/02/2025 18:27

If Brad Mondo says to do it then you should go for it. I worship him.

Over40Overdating · 15/02/2025 18:30

I don’t do Brad Mondo but very tempted by Jayne Matthews who gives classes on how to cut your own hair with a razor. Lots of shags, wolf cut, mullets but a lot of people manage really lovely bobs too

Bananaram · 15/02/2025 18:31

I do love him, when he starts his videos with "hi beautiful" I'm like 'who, me?! 🤭'

The one thing he would NEVER convince me to do though is bleach my own hair. Watching his bleach fail reactions has put me off for life!

I'll report back if I decide to go get the scissors tomorrow and give it a go. DH doesn't think it's a good idea but hopefully he will take me to get the tools as I need his driving skills 😁

I can't believe I did it, but I took the plunge! And thank god I don't hate it 🤣 the front pony rail was fine, the second one was so much more difficult, apparently I have a lot more hair in the back than in the front and it was SO difficult to get it all in a neat ponytail on the top of my head. And then cutting through such a big bit of hair with my hands high in the air burning because I have no upper body strength was not fun! By the time I had trimmed my bangs I had no more fucks to give so didn't bother going back in to try and make sure everything connected.

I'll attach a before and after picture, hopefully they upload. I need to get better at blow drying my bangs, I always want them to do that swoop to the back and they end up curving in and not looking great!

Congratulations OP so glad you love it! It looks nice.

To get your bangs to swoop backwards dry them straight up in the air from the top of your head and they fall backwards. You have to kind of wrap the brush so the hair points to the back of your head.

OohKittens · 16/02/2025 17:58

I always cut and colour my own hair, I've just cut a fringe in. My hair is wavy so it helps disguise any mistakes.

TheChosenTwo · 16/02/2025 18:38

Looks great. I don’t know who BM is but tbh I’m in the ‘hair grows’ camp so if I were bothered I’d not hesitate to cut it myself. Dd is actually training to be a hairdresser so often gives me a trim and a tidy up.
I do have a hairdresser but I’m lazy about maintenance so rarely go. It’s not a cost thing, I love going and can afford it, but I just don’t get round to it.
