Help with my aging face

middleagedandinarage · 14/02/2025 15:21

Fast approaching 40, notice a few wrinkles around my eyes and skin generally starting to feel a bit older. Until now I've just used simple dace wash and moisturiser, have always had generally good skin, normal to oily.
Any recommendations for daily use moisturisers, ideally with an SPF?
Also I think I need an eye cream.
General face routine for aging skin appreciated

Retinol.
You should use a separate spf, you don’t put moisturiser on thick enough to offer much protection.
The ordinary GF is getting rave reviews, although can’t be used at the same time as retinols so would have to be am & then retinol pm maybe?

Elemis pro collagen is an excellent bread.
or Estée Lauder advanced night repair.

edited to say:
wash your skin with a cleanser
tonic
serum
eye cream
moisturiser
retinol in the pm
sunscreen in the morning.

My advice is to bypass retinols and go for gold with a multi tasking retinoid (Tretinoin) that has been researched and proven for decades (not just months or years - at best - with even the best over the counter ingredients) to actively improve your skin texture, clear pores, speed up cell turnover for brighter, more glowy skin and also gradually fade areas of excessive pigmentation (which we all develop as the years pass). It has zero competition in my experience, with 45 years of testing just about every brand on the market. All the Dermatologists use it. Add a simple cleanser and decent moisturiser and (important!) SPF30 (minimum) every day to protect your skin from further photo damage. There are no overnight miracles with skin, despite what marketing hype may lead you to believe, but a retinoid based formula (start low strength and take it easy as some people’s skin is very sensitive to this powerful pharmaceutical active in the beginning) will definitely improve the appearance of your skin if you stick with it. In addition? 8 hrs of proper, deep, uninterrupted sleep should be a daily priority, likewise a colourful, plant based diet and making an effort to reduce stress from your day to day life as much as possible as that ages us more than just about anything. Quick fixes rarely bring long term results. Ps You should always have Tretinoin professionally prescribed (avoid the cowboy route by not buying from unregulated, unethical sellers online) I get mine from skincare service Monderma and couldn’t be happier. Skin and me do something similar but I haven’t used them. Good luck.

Get any retinoid for an anti-ageing night cream. Use it undereye as well.

Beauty of Joseon Relief sun rice probiotics SPF50 is a good all-in-one for moisturiser. They're the main Korean brand.

Tret will certainly help - it's generally considered the best anti-ageing ingredient. I'm also using Monderma's. And La Roche Posay Anthelios UVMune is a good SPF50.

Tretinoin is want you want. As others have said, you also need a separate SPF. I don't bother with a moisturiser at all in the morning, just use SPF. It really is trial and error though - the best SPF is the one you like enough to use everyday, and is affordable for you, so you don't skimp the application. I like the Nivea Q10 and Ambre Solaire ones. Don't spend much on a moisturiser - they all do the same thing. I alternate between Superdrug's Vitamin E range, Aveeno and Cerave. You don't need a separate eye cream. After you apply your tret and moisturiser at night, you might also want to consider "slugging", i.e patting over an occlusive, like vaseline.

I subscribe to skin + me. It's been a game changer for my skin. The texture and glow and fine lines are vastly improved and friends often comment on my skin. The best bit is if you have any issues the dermatologist is there to answer any questions via email. They ask for photos so they can prescribe what they think will help . I had a slight reaction to something one month round my mouth, and they sent me something that cleared it up after I sent photos!

The doser that arrives, you just twist it and out comes the amount you need for your face . Mine is made up of tretinoin, niacinamide and azelaic acid. It's a bargain for £30 a month and the doser pops through the post every month. I've a referral code to get a first doser for £3.50 if you want to try it.
