Going on a city break next week where the temperature is a feels like 1° and we’re gonna be outside a lot.

I’ve got some thin thermal leggings I used to wear while watching kids sport, now I see thermal tights and some of those are without feet? Also, there’s various different denier of them does that affect their toastiness?

Leggings should be thick and completely opaque, worn with a long top or tunic. They are not trousers, though. Footless tights are absolutely NOT trousers and are worn under a skirt or trousers to add an extra warm layer. Just got back from Morocco which is cold at night, especially in the desert or mountains , so the thermal footless tights are useful to have in your bag to put on in the evening if you're out all day.

The same as the difference between normal footless tights and leggings 🤷‍♀️ Thermal tights are a lot thinner and tighter. Leggings with a short top might not be a great look IMO but you can wear them without everyone being able to see through them and every last gynaecological detail but you wouldn’t go out of the house in just a pair of tights… 😂

Leggings will be warmer than tights but tights are more practical and look better with a dress/skirt.

I’m not wearing them as outerwear
just under jeans etc. it’s gonna be cold

M and S do various thermal leggings ranging from very thin to fleece lined. The fleece are obviously bulkier. In my experience the thin leggings are warmer and more comfy than thermal tights under jeans and trousers. Have fun!

Thanks @GellerYeller

I also have thermal socks from them. They do thick fair isle style and finer plain black that look like regular ankle socks, in multipacks.

Leggings are thicker and are an item of clothing designed to be worn alone.

Tights are thiner and designed to be worn underneath another item of clothing.

I wear M & S Heatgen leggings (standard not fleece) all winter under jeans, jeggins and trousers. They're soft, thin, aren't visible at under clothing and keep me really warm. Thermal tights are much thicker and worn with skirts and dresses.

Hi everyone, I am 54. I’m aware of the difference between leggings and tights. 🤣

I mean in this context if I was wearing these things under jeans, what’s the difference?

The seams around the bum and crotch are usually different on tights. At least they are in mine they have two seams on back leggings have trouser like seams so you can if you want, ( not that in my opinion anyone should ) wear em with out a top covering your arse.

Bodenne · 14/02/2025 05:11

My arse is lovely
I’m sure the world would continue to turn 😆

Because it is only a few days and you already have them, I would just wear what you have if they are comfortable rather than buying another pair.

Some poor quality leggings should be called tights in general

CharlotteCChapel · 14/02/2025 07:42

In my experience it's a lot hardest to put your nail through leggings

IME the thing to wear for warmth under trousers is merino longjohns. They are definitely underwear, even though they may look like leggings. Thermal tights do not IME fit like leggings or longjohns. They work very well for warmth under trousers, but IME they pull the trousers down. Something about the way the crotch is made. Footless are not quite as bad for this, but I also find that because they are more sheer the trousers are more likely to slither down. Leggings are thicker, but don't fight your trousers IYSWIM. Merino longjohns are thinner than thermal leggings, but warmer and need less frequent washing.

Yes to merino thermals, they are brilliant. Bella di Notte have nice ones. Silk ones are lovely to wear, v soft anf light , Patra have them, but silk jersey does snag easily.

Thermal tights/tights in general are often not warm enough in the feet. Adding socks/additional pairs of socks often doesn't help as it generally pulls the first layer tight to your foot which doesn't allow for air to heat and circulate. Stick with the thermal leggings you already have and add some Marino wool based socks which will keep your feel much warmer.
