Hi there. Just wondering if any experienced heel-wearers could give me the benefit of your experience: I went out yesterday and bought a couple of pairs of really (to me) high heels; at the age of 34 I thought it's about time I stopped looking so frumpy and got a bit more glam..or something.

So anyway, does anyone wear killer heels during the day, while looking after children, to the park, to the shops, etc? What do you wear with them so as not to look like you're trying too hard? Does it ever get easier to walk in them (at the moment I feel like I'm about to topple over any moment). (feel completely ridiculous actually)..

Or have I just completely wasted my money on a whim?? (I'm so not really a heels wearer but so want to be!! But currently SAHM so no opportunities to get dressed up at all)..

I'd really appreciate any advice as I'm starting to regret buying them..but I do love them and feel very unfrumpy while wearing them.

Thanks!

i wear them whenever i feel in the mood, but mostly day, usually with a dress or a pencil skirt, never with short skirts though

if i wear jeans with heels they tend to be boots

if you want to dress up in the day why not?

jammydodger · 08/05/2008 22:12

Yep, I guess with short skirts they'd be a bit OTT.
You're right, I'm just gonna wear them tomorrow (and try not to fall over!)..

get some gel inserts for the balls of your feet if they hurt, it will help

jammydodger · 08/05/2008 22:16

oh, good idea.

and if you are not used to heels, take some flats out just in case , leave them in the car

DirtySexyMummy · 08/05/2008 22:25

You will get used to wearing them, you need to get more confident. Practice wearing them around the house, wear them all day.
The gel inserts don't really work, BTW. I would suggest if they are sore, to wear them with socks round the house for a while. Then they will become moulded to the shape of your foot, cushioning you in the process.

I really bet you don't look ridiculous.

What are the shoes like? Link!

harpomarx · 08/05/2008 22:26

I used to love wearing heels but I just feel a bit silly tottering after dd in them. Wear them if i'm with other adults though (family/friends day out in the pub park kind of thing), cos then I have perfect excuse to get someone else to do the running-around-after-child-type stuff)

jammydodger · 08/05/2008 22:27

Will do! And for driving too I guess.
Do you do things like playgroups/shops/park in heels? (Sorry for sounding like a total numpty but this is the first time in my life I've ever had proper grown-up sexy shoes!)

OP posts:
harpomarx · 08/05/2008 22:31

not playgroups, too bloody dangerous and a bit silly if you ask me

shops maybe

park no

unless you live in Holland Park or Chelsea or something where all this may be normal behaviour, I don't know.

ditch the kids for a day and wear them with pride!

jammydodger · 08/05/2008 22:34

Oops, slow typing! That's the thing harpo; with 2 little boys to run after I know I'll just look ridiculous and tottery - but I'll persevere...think I just finally had enough of being frump of all frumps. And pumps..

I'll try and link..nothing amazing (New Look) but it's a start! here except they're a kind of dark red, not black.

Wear them with some long black trousers and walk tall and feel glam. Agree totally about the short skirts thing. Boots are easiest as they support more. I would wear them anywhere and not think too much about it but if you are in a hurry they are a complete pain in the arse so leave yourself plenty of time to saunter!!

DirtySexyMummy · 08/05/2008 22:48

No idea why anyone would think heels are dangerous?

RambleOn · 08/05/2008 22:50

It really makes it easier to wear them when they're a bit worn in - and the soles are scuffed.

I do mine with sandpaper

harpomarx · 08/05/2008 22:51

oh, just danger of treading on crawling babies, that kind of thing

a bit embarrassing if you're wearing metal stillettoes (sp?) or something!

DirtySexyMummy · 08/05/2008 23:00

Jesus, I have never stood on a baby, flats or heels!

elfinblast · 08/05/2008 23:12

I was on a local park earlier and a small boy got caught upside down on a climbing frame. He was screaming for his mum and she was trying to teeter over in ridiculously high heels. Luckily a flat heeled wearing parent ran and caught the kid just as he slipped. He was about an inch away from casualty.

Maybe practice round the supermarket. You can always lean on the trolley if they hurt!

barbamama · 08/05/2008 23:27

I wore heeled sandals for the first time today in about 4 years (heels of any sort that is!) - pregnancy - SPD - childbirth - post-pregnancy overweight - pregnancy again - SPD - couldn't be arsed with small baby - but for some reason today I grabbed an old pair of high strappy sandals on a whim - think it was the hot weather. I wore them with turned up denim shorts and a vest and, whilst I think it looked good (lost the weight) I did feel a tad overdressed in Morrisons and some of the other mothers were giving me disapproving looks in the park. On the other hand, a group of teenage boys oggled me. Guess you can't please everyone. Oh, and my ankles hurt ....

grumpybum · 09/05/2008 08:00

maybe the looks werent disapproving maybe it was jealousy.
