Summer dress recommendations - classy understated size 18 / tall

Chocolatey1234 · 11/02/2025 22:19

Anyone recommend any nice summer occasion dresses size 18 and tall 5ft 10, ideally not too structured and fabric breathable incase we have a warm summer as I have a tendency to over heat 50’s, so also nothing strapless or strappy.

Not black, all cream/white (as one of the events is a wedding) or pale pink. I don’t mind a bit of colour. Budget ideally up to £175 max but ideally under this if poss. Thanks

I’m taller than you and found Gina Bacconi dresses work well. They’re true to size, and on John Lewis as well as their own website (they have a sale on). Agree with you on LTS quality, yuk.

I’m 5ft 8 so not as tall as you, but also veering wildly between 16-20 over the past few years. Completely agree Gina Bacconi is a good shout. I’ve had a couple of dresses from there and they’re well made, and come in a full range of sizes. They have lots of v long dresses that don’t absolutely have to be maxi and would look fine at ankle length so might work for you.
Some of them are jersey; I wear a lot of this shape jersey dress in the summer as I find it’s pretty good at being breathable, not getting sticky or sweaty, or clinging.

Just a couple here but there are more if you filter within the brand.

Also, I like these Kew Collection dresses on Next. It does say it’s a “mesh fabric” which makes me wonder about how comfortable or breathable it is, but it does look nice and might be worth ordering to try.
They seem to have some in their “tall” range when you click on the sizes - low stock but not unavailable? “Our tall collection is designed to fit women 5'10" and above. This has been proportionally increased through the body, leg and sleeve to achieve the perfect fit. Available in sizes 8-20”

I'm 5'10 and have bought dresses from www.poetryfashion.co.uk/. Some dresses might be too casual, but they're usually quite long and lovely quality.

Love that navy dress.

Me (6ft size 14-16) again.
I also have a Phase Eight maxi dress that is lovely for smart occasions. It's again bodiced and flowing without a waist so my height not an issue. It's more of a long midi on me.

I find "tall" dresses often fit poorly as they have to be the right kind of tall for your body shape iyswim.

Totally agree. I am tall because of long legs so don't need dresses or tops with extra length in the body.

Chocolatey1234 · 16/02/2025 21:56

My haul from Next sadly didn’t have anything suitable so I am still looking. I even tried the blue dress recommended by @Punsandroses it was very sweaty fabric, the collar didn’t right and it didn’t di anything for me. The best was a Monsoon dress but I didn’t love it, it wasn’t quite right and I can’t imagine any other occasion I would wear. I will look again in a few weeks time.

Me + em.
I'm 6ft and tried 3 amazing dresses on that all fitted, was so pleasantly surprised!

ScaryM0nster · 16/02/2025 22:11

Have a look at Scarlet and Jo.

I’m 5’8 definite 18 and a lot of boob and tummy and that’s what I wore to my brothers wedding.

If the fit and flare style suits you then they’ve got a lot in that style, and there’s some slight stretch in the waist so they’re comfy to wear.

Chocolatey1234 · 17/02/2025 07:04

Thanks both will look at those two brands. I had a S & J one in my Next haul it fitted but the band felt too high and it really emphasised my tummy.

I am same size as you but taller op. I find Dutch clothing companies really useful. Try Fabienne Chapot, Sissy Boy (annoying name but good) www.sissy-boy.com/dames/kleding/jurken/
Mexx too although not sure if they're still trading.

But yeah, search Dutch women's fashion brands.

WrinklesShminkles · 17/02/2025 13:53

I'm the same size and height as you. How about this - it's over budget though 😕Toast dress

Chocolatey1234 · 17/02/2025 20:05

Thanks I don’t think I am trendy enough for Toast at almost 60 and that dress is possibly not dressy enough (I was thinking midaxi/maxi length cool to wear) and I would be reluctant to order from the firm in Holland due to returns and possible custom charges as not sure about sizes etc.

I’ll maybe leave it a couple of weeks hoping most places have summer collection out by then.
