If you were packing for a week's break, what would you take?

I find this so hard. I'll be in a coastal town for one week and only want to take carry on luggage (back pack and small case - compliant with Ryan Air limitations).

I will wear jeans and a jumper, sneakers and my winter jacket on the plane.

I need to manage something that can also be worn to a church service but that for a couple of hours so I resent the space it takes up in my luggage.

There'll be no clubbing or requirements for smart evenings out. But we will eat out occasionally in relaxed restaurants.

I think we need a clue about expected temperature and time of year.

BobbyBiscuits · 11/02/2025 13:18

If it was summer then I'd literally just bring a vest per day, three pairs of shorts and three or 4 swimsuits/bikini.
But I'm gathering it's not if you're wearing winter clothes to travel.
One nice but un-bulky dress, a skirt, a pair of trousers and one t-shirt/vest per day? Then two cardigans/jumpers. Socks and pants obviously. One or two pairs of tights? Would you need a second shoe option?

Depends where you're going, what time of year, whether it's a special occasion or whether you're likely to be hiking in the Scottish mountains or sunbathing in Barbados.

A non creassble dark dress that can double up for church and the odd meal out. One of the bias cut satin skirts that are everywhere, with a couple of tops. Pair of shoes to go with said dress/skirt. Jumper or cardigan. Scarf.t shirts/tops to go with jeans and pair trackies or leggings for relaxing

It's Ireland. But thank you. Good tips so far.

Jumper dress for the church service with wool or thermal tights? It will probably be freezing and you’ll keep your coat on anyway, but at least you can wear it for the rest of the trip. I’d bring boots instead of trainers (unless they’re waterproof and warm).

Hmm...
Following with interest as I'm doing paris next month and I don't think it'll be very hot. I'm used to packing for sunny holidays.

Whether might be similar to Ireland.

I think I'll take at least 6 tshirts (as I often find I underpack those). A jumper. A cardigan or something to wrap around me in the evenings. A pair of jeans. A pair of shorts. 2 dresses that are day to night intergangrable. And two pairs of thick black wool tights. That way if it's cold I can wear them under shorts.

That's the rough plan anyway.

Sodthesystem · 11/02/2025 17:36

Oh and a spare pair of shoes that you can walk in. Incase the first pair get soaked and take a day to dry. Which they probably will in Ireland. If you make it black converse or something like that the they'll do for church/eating out too.

Sgtmajormummy · 11/02/2025 17:42

Ireland can be chilly at all times of the year. Even in Summer you need a sweatshirt in the evenings. I’d go with denim jacket/ light collarless puffer and white trainers for your dress (cliche but you’d use both with other outfits).
A hat, infinity scarf and gloves don’t take up much room and would give you extra warmth.
Umbrella is a must.
I was in Dublin in September for 4 days with just underseat luggage (2 trousers, 4 tshirts, underwear and pjs plus tech) I wore my jacket and jumper on the plane and the only thing I missed was a second pair of shoes.

In these temperatures?
Well, I'm going to Amsterdam for 3 nights in 3 weeks, and planning on taking 2 pairs of black leggings, 2 smartish Jersey dresses, 1 long sleeved top and 1 spare vest (plus underwear), and wearing jeans, another long sleeved top and a thick cardigan on the train, plus a fake fur coat and a big scarf. And only taking my DM Chelsea boots because they're good for all occasions. If I was going for a week I'd take a skirt, several more long sleeved tops, and maybe another pair of jeans.

If I was planning on walking/ spending time in the countryside I'd take shorts, as they're quite versatile worn over leggings. And take a less fabulous but more waterproof jacket.
