Do you really need special coloured hair shampoo (if you have coloured hair obv)

Has anyone with coloured hair done an experiment to see whether it makes any difference whether you use special shampoo?

Am trying to find really nice smelling shampoo for coloured hair and not getting anywhere. But there are loads of nice smelling ones that don't specifically say they are for coloured hair. Am wondering whether they would in fact be fine?

I don't particularly buy shampoo for coloured hair. At the moment I'm using Kérastase Elixir Ultime Shampoo & like it.

I use the L'Oréal Elvive one for colour as every other shampoo (whatever the price or promise) has stripped the colour out.

I have coloured hair and use a coloured shampoo because it makes the colour last longer. You don't need to use it if you are able to keep getting the colour topped up, but for me it increases the time between full colours and keeps my hair glossier.

I have lighter blonde highlights twice a yr ish but am a dark blonde. Don't have an issue with the colour fading. I have used the Pureology colour one. which has a nice smell and I liked.

Ah - that's interesting as seems mixed opinions on whether colour shampoo really is better. I do want to try to keep colour for as long as possible, but colour shampoo never seems to smell as nice. Will give pureology a go though. And any other suggestions welcome!

Does the L'Oreal one smell nice @EmmaStone?

Like the sound of glossiness @InSpainTheRain - which one do you use?

@wipeywipe is that not specifically for coloured hair?

The Keratase one, that is.

@lummox no it isn't.

Herbal Essences coloured hair one smells lovely! I think it's rose scented (pink bottle anyway), and keeps my red hair quite bright until I re-dye!

Dizzybob · 09/02/2025 18:47

I was sceptical at first and never used a colour shampoo. Around 6 months ago I bought the colour shampoo set the hairdresser recommended on a whim and it had actually made a huge difference

I use that too

I use Aussie colour products, smells lovely.

I like it, smells very clean!

Cyclingmummy1 · 09/02/2025 20:45

I use Redken purple shampoo. It definitely keeps the colour brighter.

BettySweaty · 09/02/2025 22:08

Best shampoo & conditioner I've ever used for my blonde hair was Fanola. Recommended by my hairdresser. Kept it a really lovely colour and in good condition. My colleagues ended up using it as well. Wouldn't use anything else now.

Any tips for brunette? Mine gets blonder snf blonder and I really want to keep it dark.

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 09/02/2025 22:16

Depends on your budget but maybe try Kevin Murphy, I love their products. Although I haven’t used the colour ones myself but they do travel size so you could try first before buying a big bottle?

Bed Head - Colour Goddess

Smells like caramel 😊

What I've found helps my colour to stay though is washing in cold water!

I was used the OGX coconut shampoo for coloured hair for years and it clearly made my highlights last longer and look more vibrant.

However (and someone might know on here) but they've seemingly changed the formula and it's almost impossible to make it lather! I've just changed to Aussie coloured shampoo instead but annoying as I really did like the OGX one.

I also use a purple shampoo once a week.

pizzaHeart · 10/02/2025 08:19

Yes, shampoo for coloured hair keeps colour longer. I use John Frieda for highlights it smells ok but I don’t like strong smelly ones even if it’s a nice smell. I don’t like interference with my perfume.

MinnieCauldwell · 10/02/2025 08:49

I find a sulphate free colour shampoo and conditioner prevents colour fade, I use a purple conditioner every 3 washes. Sulphate free sometimes does not matter well however I am using Charles Worthington thats pretty good.

NeedWineNow · 10/02/2025 09:02

I do. I’ve used the Herbal Essences one in the pink bottle for years, however I’m noticing that I get some hair loss with it now (don’t know if they’ve changed the formula) so I’m trying the L’Oréal Elvive and also the Aldi version both of which seem to be good.

My absolute favourite is Philip Kingsley but that’s a bit £££ at the moment for me.

Is there any such thing as shampoo for coloured hair but an oily scalp. I agree that regular shampoo strips the colour (brunette, makes it brassy). Unfortunately shampoo for coloured hair doesn’t clean my scalp adequately, despite multiple shampoos and through rinsing. Think I’m chasing a unicorn though
