Which colour glasses frame will suit me?

I have white hair and pale skin except for quite ruddy cheeks. I'm about to spend quite a bit (to me) on some varifocal glasses, and I'm wondering if anyone can help me choose a colour that would suit me? I'm at a loss.

What colours do you normally wear? Think of your glasses as part of your overall outfit so either go cool and pale (so subtle) if that's what fits or something more dramatic and bold but only if that's what works with everything else.

I'm fair with ruddy cheeks too, and I have a sort of beige pair, a tortoiseshell pair and a dark blue pair. I wear a lot of navy, so blue was a given and the neutral ones are to wear with everything else (tortoiseshell mainly for when I want to look like I mean business 🙃). I have a very straightforward single vision prescription though, so buying multiple pairs isn't such an investment.

I have quite a featureless face, so I go for thicker plastic frames to break up the expanse between chin and hair.

Similar colouring, mine are sort of dark purple/navy. The last ones were dark pink tortoiseshell

With silver/light hair i think a bit of colour looks nice

I have your colouring and needed a very expensive prescription, so I chose an oversized Ralph Lauren in a kind of tinted light grey with very narrow gold metal arms. This was so they would go with everything. Regarding makeup I go fairly minimal with blended grey eye-shadow but always a colourful lip - this time of the year usually burgundy/plum. Hopefully this stops me becoming invisible!

Similar colouring here.
I got some very reasonably priced rimless ones from Specs-by - Post. So light and comfortable.

Interesting - I wear a lot of black and navy, if that helps, and I'll only be getting one pair. Also my hair is old lady white, not blonde.

Specsavers (and probably others by now) do a virtual glasses try-on using a photo and digital mock-up:

I've heard that something close to your hair colour usually suits

Madickenxx · 06/02/2025 16:31

Similar colouring and have one pair of brown and one pair of pink / brown tortoiseshell oversized plastic frames. I think it's a matter of trying loads on and see which ones you feel most comfortable / yourself in.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/02/2025 16:34

Metal - same as your preferred jewellery colour.

Other than that, I'd say either a very dark blue or tortoiseshell.

And get some cheap single vision frames in multiple colours to be a back up both when you're adjusting to the varifocals and in case you need to get them repaired at any point/your vision changes again.

The13thFairy · 06/02/2025 16:37

Thank you for your help; you've given me loads to chew on, so to speak. I feel much more confident in choosing now.

I think white/grey hair looks amazing with plain strong colours. There's a silver haired chap locally who wears quite traditional old chap clothes - cords, Viyella shirts, Barbour - abs bright red, round plastic specs. He looks fab.

Chewbecca · 06/02/2025 16:58

I used Ray-Ban's virtual try on tool and it really helped me.

If you can, try on a few pairs, maybe take some selfies, get a friend or family member to give you their opinion. Then take a few days to choose and maybe return to the store again and try a few more. The optician should be able to help as well.

I hate it when you feel rushed; especially if you've been ages in an eye appointment and then have to wait around to choose after.

Also, I think some opticians have a certain number of days where you can change your mind. I had blue filters put in my last varifocal lenses but they showed up as blue blobs in photos and Boots let me have them removed for no charge, for example.

mdinbc · 06/02/2025 18:25

When I am choosing a new pair of glasses, I try on loads, then narrow it down to 3. Then either take some selfies with the glasses on, or get a friend or family member to help choose.

I'm grey haired and medium/pale skin and have a tortoiseshell pair with rose-gold arms. My older ones are navy, but I still use them on occasion..

CharlotteStreetW1 · 06/02/2025 21:17

I'm very blonde and fair skinned. I liked a pale pink pair but they were too insipid for my colouring so I've gone for a stronger pink similar to these www.specsavers.co.uk/glasses/flora-plus?sku=33135076&qid=30e1957646596e9860f87deedbe13088

And another pair in a much darker colour, sorry of very dark red/black.
