Where to buy good quality buttons?

I am changing the buttons on a jacket. Bought buttons from Amazon and they were very plastic-y and cheap looking. Also tried etsy. More expensive, same quality likely from China.

Just looking for metal buttons.

For online try Hobbycraft or John Lewis. If you have a small independent fabric or knitting shop in the area that will be your best bet. You can usually buy buttons individually and there will be more choice.

Try looking in a charity shop. Ignore what the buttons are attached to - it doesn't matter that it's not a jacket / it's the wrong colour / it's not your size / etc / etc.
Just concentrate on the style, size and number of buttons.
The sale-rail can be brilliant.

I buy from my local fabric shop, huge range and you can feel them before buying!

I have a huge jam jar of buttons that I have removed from clothes that go to the recycling bin. I am sure they will come in handy one day!
But repurposing from a charity shop item is a great idea.
