Help me find ‘acceptable’ flats

Afternoon all,
I have quite a few evenings out coming up (bottomless ‘brunch’, over 30s clubbing birthday trip for a friend, nice bars in city with live music etc etc). These are the kinds of things I like to wear. I’m purposely not saying how old I am for fear you might say I’m too old for this style and I love them and feel confident in them (4.5 stone weight loss in the last year so it’s been a loooong time since I’ve felt confident in anything) so the dresses will stay, but I usually wear chunkyish heels with them which help me to feel taller and slimmer but…

  1. I want to really dance at these events and they’re not that practical
  2. I could count on 1 hand how many others were wearing heels so I felt a little old/old fashioned
Granted most weren’t as ‘dressed up’ and that might be why they didn’t have heels on to some extent, but I really like to dress up whenever I can.

What can I wear on my feet with this kind of dress so I can still dance and still look good/not out of place? Have done the white trainers type look but not sure now…could be persuaded back to it for the right pair if that’s the thing to do!

Thanks in advance!

I tend to go sparkly flat sandals but that’s just what I have!

I think some smart trainers would work and more practical this time of year. Leather (or leather look) ones I would go for

but I’m not a style icon 🙃

I tend to go for a chunky mid heeled ankle boot with these type of dresses ( about 7cm) cos I am terrible in heels or if it's summer then the same height of heel in a sandal or mule. Couldn't do a lot of walking though! If it's a pub crawl or no taxi situation then has to be trainers 😛

I love all those dresses BTW but not the shoes.

I'd have a look at proper dance shoes that ha e a heel, are elegant and give a little height and are very comfy. Alternatively, Jones have a few nice styles for dresser dresses. I'll try to link.

Well, you’ve said those are the sort of dresses you like to wear - and that’s entirely your choice. However - that shape of dress just isn’t current, and wasn’t designed to be worn with the type of flat shoes - ballet flats, Mary Janes, loafers, that are in fashion right now.

So if you stick to your preferred dress shape you may struggle to find flat shoes that make a cohesive outfit. If you want to dance, and look fashionable, you’ll need a different kind of dress.

Thank you. I don’t want to look ‘fashionable’ necessarily, just not old fashioned and given I bought them all new in the last 6 months. I’d hope they’re not too passé!
I do get what you mean about struggling to find a cohesive outfit though. I wore the pink one with new balance 327s for a concert last year and got lots of compliments but they’re not in the best nick now and so was wondering about something else. Might just have to go back to the higher shoes and manage..:

Thank you to everyone so far. Problem is I’m fussy I think and struggle to like much. While I can see the shoes linked would be comfortable and practical, I’m just not keen…

Thanks all!

Flat shoes for dancing:

Zara 1

Zara 2

Zara 3

Etc. …

Aprilcherry04 · 02/02/2025 14:58

These are the styles I would wear with those dresses. I'm 57.

I agree with QuaterMiss

I don't like that style of dress but if that style is your bag it's possibly the one style of dress which won't work with flat shoes or flat boots.

There's gazillions of gorgeous, wearable flat shoes around at all price ranges from under £20 at Tu to LK Bennet at a couple of £ to brands like Alaïa and The Row at over £1,000 and none of them will be right. You'd be better wearing the sort of heels that are usually paired with that style and taking a pair of fold up pumps for dancing.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 02/02/2025 15:10

Black boots with first dress. Poss biker / goth / doc martens depending on your style.

Middle dress vans or converse

Bottom dress either trainers or save to wear sandals with in summer

MrsJHernandez · 02/02/2025 16:44

Ankle boots with a bit of a heel I reckon!

As someone else mentioned, these dresses don't go with flats and I'd only wear trainers with the multicoloured pink dress.

Can’t help with shoes but love the dresses! Where do you shop as I like the style and it suits my shape?
