Blonde and never dyed my hair. Now have grey and white hairs. What do I do?

I'm blonde and have never had highlights. I usually just use Sun In (I know!) every few months to lift my colour. I've now started getting white and grey hairs coming through. I'm 50 in not ready to go grey/white yet so wondered what you would advise in terms of colouring my hair to cover the greys. I have absolutely no clue as I've never had my hair coloured at the hairdresser. My hairdresser said I could just started herring it coloured to cover the greys but I don't know what colour to go for. Do I try and change my hair colour to a lighter or darker blonde?
Sorry for the blurred out faces in my photos!

I just use Clairol nice and easy No 8 I only need to do my roots every few weeks

You'd need a lighter colour so going up in number ie 9, 10

It should be really easy for you to dye your hair because it's already blonde at home

Pinkissmart · 02/02/2025 09:42

It seems to me that people who are blonde tend to look really good with grey/ white hair. Would you be happy to let it transition naturally?

Princessbananahamock · 02/02/2025 09:42

I had mine highlighted and if I see any noticeable greys! I use L’Oréal magic retouch in blonde. It’s like a mascara stick to touch up hair. Works though

TheFormidableMrsC · 02/02/2025 09:44

I'd get a very good purple shampoo and conditioner to lift your hair and brighten it.

haircolourq · 02/02/2025 09:53

Thanks all. I'll check out the Clairol dye thought I'm a bit scared of using a box dye as I've never used one before!
I like the sound of the L'Oréal touch up thingy.
@Pinkissmart absolutely no way. I would like to stay blonde for as long as possible. I'm sad to say I think my friends and colleagues who have gone grey seem to have aged about a decade and their skin looks grey too. I'd like to avoid that if possible.
@TheFormidableMrsC I used to use a purple shampoo but it made my hair really dark. The best one I used was a kerastase one but my hair turned brown with it as I think it really darkened my roots. My hairdresser suggested I just use it on the mid lengths to ends of my hair so I'll maybe try that.

Try Bleach London Silver Shampoo and Conditioner.

betterchoices · 02/02/2025 09:57

Look up grey blending. I follow on IG someone called Rosie baylis who does this and I think for blonde hair it would work exceptionally well. She does guides so you can let your own hairdresser know how to do it you don’t have to go to her. It’s really subtle.

haircolourq · 02/02/2025 09:58

I know I'm being a bit daft @TheFormidableMrsC but will that not just make my hair look silver? What does it actually do?

You only ever need to be scared of dying your hair blind if you have brown hair

If you already have blonde there's nothing to go wrong

I'm an 8 on here

You're probably a 9B but you can tell more when you click on each colour to what's best for you

KittenPause · 02/02/2025 10:06

You could try a semi permanent dye first

Sun in is colouring your hair. You can only lighten with bleach, sun in is a weaker bleach, that’s why your hair is lifting to that warm blond/brown colour.

Your roots look more of a light ash brown, I would ask for a full head of highlights and toner to neutralise the warmth. You can then gradually go more of an ash blonde which will mean the new grey hair will blend in better with the existing darker roots and you won’t have that strip.

Bluelagoondrmr · 02/02/2025 10:29

You are highlighting your hair - sunin is bleach which is what highlights are. As others have said why not just hand your colour over to the professionals. I'm blonde with white grey at the front so am just going lighter and lighter with my highlights as I get older.

MightyGoldBear · 02/02/2025 13:47

I'd really reccomend looking into grey blending.

I'm early 30s and going very silver like 60 percent so I'm blending it in to a really lovely ashy blonde I have low lights to provide some depth and to mix in with my natural mousey brown/dark blonde hair colour that's left.

It works so well. I had lots of warmth before and dying all over it was such a pain it really needed to be done every 2 or 4 weeks to avoid that banding of grey which was too much for me. I felt that aged me more than grey blending as it feels like I'm embracing my natural hair without it looking grey. I'd really reccomend doing it with a hairdresser you feel confident with as they can see your exact colour. My hair has a tendency to give out warmth so my hair dresser knows exactly how to combat this. Where as doing it alone I'd never of said my natural hair does that at all.

I'm actually really excited about going more silver now i have a plan in place that feels right. Before it felt like such a fight and like I was forever hiding it. This way the silvers are seamlessly woven in. The initial appointment might be a little costly but this way you don't have massive regrowth that needs doing so frequently. A hairdresser can also reccomend a good silver shampoo to keep it bright and not brassy.

Lifestooshort71 · 02/02/2025 15:34

This lasts about 3/4 washes and gradually fades. It's very gentle on my hair and does quite a good job at covering grey. Have a go (it's less than £3 a pot and lasts ages)

Thanks all. I'll def look into the grey blending thing. Sounds perfect.
And I like the look of the semi permanent dye from Superdrug. Thanks

Sorry for late reply. It just lifts the blonde and removes the brassy bits. Easier to blend your grey. I'm dark brown with some big silver streaks. I'm also allergic to hair dye so I used to use it to lift the silver and make it sparkle. I think if you're a novice, it would be worth seeing a hairdresser and investing in blending it.

Brainfogblue · 02/02/2025 18:05

As a very dark brunette ( once) I would honestly say that the grey and white will probably come very slowly over time . Although I am quite grey at the front the back of my hair now mostly just looks lighter brown . The really dark hair wouldn’t suit me now as my skin is changing too . I would imagine you would end up just looking lighter blonde for quite some time . I’m 52 and have probably been greying for about 5/6 years . It may not be as bad as you think if you can hold your nerve for a while

ErrolTheDragon · 02/02/2025 18:12

I can't see any white or grey in those photos.
I've had a few for years, I'm 64 now and I doubt anyone other than me and my hairdresser notice them - they just blend into my natural sun highlights.

I'd honestly leave well alone for now rather than starting down the dye route.

Semi will make it darker though.

haircolourq · 02/02/2025 19:28

@Plaided will it? Had no idea. I thought it would just look like the hair on the box.
@ErrolTheDragon I don't really have a lot. I have a few strands of white or silver hair on my fringe and some at my temples. It's not that noticeable but I'm thinking of the future.

Plaided · 02/02/2025 20:45

Well your hair won’t lift like that with a semi, it’s used for glossing mostly. Because your hair has been dyed to a warm light brown/blonde by the sun in, it will be more porous and depending on the shade you pick will either go more warm/red or green! I would go to hairdresser. It will save a lot of money in the long run.

But she’s been dying it for years!

ErrolTheDragon · 02/02/2025 20:55

Well, bleaching rather than dyeing as such - I think I agree @Plaided that adding dye may not do what the OP hopes.
