What do you wear to go out for dinner if you're over 5

Since the end of skinny jeans I've struggled with the most basic 'going out for dinner with friends' outfit. I'm very much a jeans person, although I have some smart casual dresses I wear for work with knee high boots. I've got wide leg jeans, straight leg, and slightly flared jeans. I wear them all casually but they all look a bit too casual for a Saturday night dinner (even a very informal one). I struggle with this every time I go out. I'm not happy with my body at the moment as the size 12 I have always been has become a size 14 apple shape.

Do you mean over 50? 😅

KeepOnCleaning · 01/02/2025 08:34

Lol! How do I get that changed?

Came ready to list DSs 'smart wardrobe' 😂

I giggled at this too, because I'm sure it's 50 but I'm really hoping someone will say a princess dress.

Do you have anything like white trousers OP? Some white trousers and a pink or other fairly brightly styled top go down well with changing skin tones.

I do think some lose fitting bodysuits with a belt can look bloody brill on someone in their 50's, skirts tend to accentuate an apple shape

Meadowfinch · 01/02/2025 08:38

In winter, a fit&flare maxi dress with boots or wide legged wool trousers and a fine gauge jumper.

Summer, cotton dress or linen trousers &top.

wafflesmgee · 01/02/2025 08:38

kate Middleton style button up dress with leather jacket

three quarter length top tucked into a skirt with dark tights and boots

Completelyjo · 01/02/2025 08:39

I think wider jeans can look more formal than skinny jeans.
With wider jeans you need to have a tighter tucked in top unless you’re a 20 year old rake and going for the oversized on oversized look.
A tucked in top and some pointed boots will look dressy.

Sherararara · 01/02/2025 08:40

After 5 I stopped wearing onesies and my Frozen slippers everywhere.
Still someone’s dress as Wonder Woman to go to the local Pizza Express.

Blarn · 01/02/2025 08:44

I don't think you need to worry about it for a few more years. Your friends might start to snigger at character things like Paw Patrol or Elsa once you get to around 9 but if you are happy it doesn't matter.

Sorry! Having a bad morning and your title really made me smile!

cheezncrackers · 01/02/2025 08:45

I'm 51. I went out for dinner last night. Gastro pub. Group of friends. I wore straight leg dark jeans, a nice blouse and black suede boots.

If I was going to a smarter restaurant then I'd wear something more dressy - a smarter pair of trousers (say a black, tailored pair), a blouse and skirt, dress, etc. Same as I have in the past. I don't think you have to change your essential look or style as you age and it's always good to buy a couple of new pieces each season so you have something nice to wear when you go out.

Ilovelowry · 01/02/2025 08:52

I so very rarely go out. But we did go to one of The Pig restaurants for dinner recently and I wore velvet quilted pointed flats from Marks and Spencer, wide leg raw hem jeans in pale blue and a pale pink/oyster, half button, v neck silk blouse (no collar as they look awful on me).

This is my going out outfit for about the next five years.

KeepOnCleaning · 01/02/2025 08:53

I think it's the shoes I'm getting wrong. I need to find some comfy, smart black boots

White trousers or a bodysuit in February?

I had to read your post twice I wasn't sure if you were being funny and writing it for an actual 5yr old 😲😂

Why do you? My flats were navy velvet.

I can't wear boots anymore due to joint problems and it's a revelation not to feel like I'm falling over when I stand up from the dinner table. Not drinking helps too!

I wondered this too!

I'm an apple shape and 54. I bought a few satin bias cut mid skirts from Mango and Zara in black, a deep burgundy and leopard print. They are elasticated waist, so perfect for the "waistless" shape and skim your legs and hips in a really flattering way.

I wear with either a dark brown or black wrap style blouse, a crew neck shortish jumper (the skirt can sit pretty high on the body) or a black cashmere polo neck from Uniqlo. To elevate a bit I sometimes wear a black velvet blazer.

I normally wear with flat lace up boots. I have a brown dm style pair from Zara, or a patent black pair from Ravel. But I've also worn the black skirt with Zara buckled Leopardskin ballet flats. I have a pair of stretchy, faux suede studded ankle boots with a kitten heel that look more dressy with a skirt too.

I also love the fact that they wash well, dry fast, and don't need ironing if hung to dry on a clip hanger.😅

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 01/02/2025 09:27

Sorry midi length, not mid.

I assumed OP was being funny because if you're under 5 you're pretty much stuck with what you're parent puts on you and you don't need to worry about getting it wrong "Over 50" - is irrelevant.

KeepOnCleaning · 01/02/2025 16:06

If anyone is still wondering, I wasn't being funny. It was a genuine post with a typo in the subject! Obviously I meant to say over 50!

Not sure what being over 50 has to do with it but I'll be wearing this skirt tonight to a gastropub.
Kindred of Ireland skirt

With a plain cream version of this blouse
Meadows blouse

And either red patent or black patent pointy ballet pumps or flat black lace up boots.

I would wear a fitted midi woolen dress with boots. Or I have a satin skirt and a pleated one. I would wear them with boots and a jumper . Shoes would look fine but my legs are awful and I live in Scotland so it’s either cold or raining.

Where is it you are going to ? The clothes you describe sound fine for most places.
