I’ve always been super low maintenance {lazy} with my skin care regime. I don’t really have one. I only wear make up about once a week so on that day I use a make up remover / cleanser. The other days I mainly just wash my face in the shower and the grab whatever moisturiser is around (sometimes face moisturiser and sometimes just the emollient I use on my baby who has eczema). I’m 40 now and suddenly my skin is starting to look really sad. I do try not to preoccupy myself too much with my appearance because I feel like getting older will be much easier if I don’t think about it too much… however, I’m now starting to think I should be looking after my skin better.

I’m not going to suddenly start spending loads of time (or money) on a complicated skin care regime but I was hoping someone here can suggest an suggest a few products that would give me good bang for by buck (time and money wise)?

I’m white and mu skin used to be a bit oily in the middle when I was younger but now I’d say it’s pretty uniform. It’s a bit dry all over when I get out the shower but given how little I moisturise it I wouldn’t say it’s particularly dry (if that helps).

many thanks in advance 🙏

I think above anything you should get a SPF that you wear daily.

ShushImTalking · 30/01/2025 08:41

Get a face wash you can leave in the shower, and a bottle of moisturiser. Maybe something unperfumed and organic. As PP says, spf is most important, as is enough water, not too much alcohol and eating well. Keep it simple.

If you smoke, stop.

Icanttakethisanymore · 30/01/2025 09:20

Thank you! To add I don’t smoke and I eat healthily. I don’t drink a great deal. Is there a moisturiser (with spf) or a brand you’d recommend?

I always find Clarins stuff lovely, but I tend to only buy once a year and use a supermarket bottle of Olay in between

I've been using this brightening and exfoliating face wash for about 15 years. Not drying, skin feels really clean and also keep my DH's very oily skin at bay.

I really like this broad spectrum day moisturiser

I also use the elf eye cream

I love this toner. It really brightens and smooths skin

And also love this mask once or twice a week (it does sting a bit, but that's normal. Never any harm done)

SPF 50 is recommended if you use acid skincare.

I'm 41 BTW!

The 3 things that made the most difference to my skin was La Mer moisturiser, skin needling, and giving up sugar. It took about 2 weeks off sugar before I looked in the mirror and noticed a big difference.

The other thing Ill mention which isn’t in the least bit helpful is that I once went without a shower for around a week due to a road trip, moving from hotel to hotel and having an anxious teen who hogged the bathroom. My skin looked fabulous at the end, all plump and glowing. So yeah, add abandoning personal hygiene to the list.

My skin & age is similar to yours and here’s my cheap and basic routine:

Morning
Wash face with warm, wrung-out facecloth
Apply Nivea Day Cream, either the blue (normal) one or green (oily) one.
Apply good amount (2 finger-length lines) of Garnier Amber Solaire Super UV SPF 50, either “anti-age” or “anti-dark spots”. Both are good, just have different textures. Usually on offer somewhere.

Evening
Use cream cleanser and wrung out facecloth to clean face.
Apply Simple Rich Moisturiser and Boots Botanics facial oil if I’m feeling fancy.

I might start adding in something (a serum? Not sure) as I head into my 40s, but this very basic routine has been working well for me for a long time.

I'm in my late 40's now with good skin, and have used only oil on my skin for the last 15 years. I use either black seed, coconut or olive. I sometimes use toner first if my skin looks a bit dull. I'm with you on the simplicity, better for the skin and the mind 😂

lingalingalong · 31/01/2025 06:50

Definitely not too late to start a skincare routine at 40.

  • Pick a cleanser suitable for your skin type. I’m 42 and in the oily skin category. I also wash my face in the shower
  • Once patted dry, use a toner (choose the alcohol free ones)
  • Serum (I find Lancôme Génifique made a difference, been using it for 2 years. It may seem expensive but a big bottle lasts a long time)
  • once serum is dried up on the face, use a moisturiser based on skin type
  • finish off with an SPF50 sunscreen (only during the day)
  • also beneficial to use a night cream at night (instead of the day moisturiser)
  • aim to drink 2.5-3L of water everyday and take a collagen supplement

These were my mums advice/recommendation and she looks rather amazing at 65!

Cerave products are dermatologist recommended, and are cheap.
I'd buy the face wash and the moisturiser with spf.
You don't need serums and eye creams.
You could try a face oil overnight if you need extra moisture.
