Dress for 40th birthday!

Never posted on S&B before 😁 it's my 40th birthday in April, I'm having a party to celebrate and I need some help finding an outfit!

The party is in a nice local pub, the vibe is going to be pretty chilled but I still want to look FABULOUS! I'm a size 10-12 (although working on being a mid size 10 by the party), I have long legs, a slight mum tum and slightly larger upper arms than I'd like (but again, working on this at the gym!) and a large(ish) chest so being able to wear a bra is a must.

I will 100% spend most of the night dancing, and I don't do well in heels. I have a pair of black ankle boots with a small chunky heel that are my go-to if I'm out, so something I can pair with these would be ideal, but I might get something new if I think I'll last in them and the outfit warrants them.

Budget wise, I don't have loads to spend. Probably max £75ish on a nice dress, especially if I need new shoes! But for the PERFECT dress or outfit I might be able to find a bit more..

People of S&B, please inspire me!

She’s not buying the model 😒

No. But I'd wonder what it would look like on me, not being 15. Mind, my rule of thumb is if it looks good on the hanger it won't look good on me - this, I find, generally works.😀

It’s totally my style and I would wear it. I say that as a plus sized woman in her late 30s!

I have something like it. I am considerably more than 30!

How about something from Odd Muse

oddmuse.co.uk/collections/dresses

Can't speak from experience but they seem to have a good write up and i love the structure of them! I think they would look good with heels or boots so could work for you?

Never mind! Having seen the shape you prefer, how about one of these:

Sister Jane dresses

I set the filter for up to £100 but you may have to re-set. They are all more obviously fabulous - but, as you’ve missed the sale, mostly a bit above your budget limit.

Cute dresses. Thanks for sharing

Don’t know if it’s dressy enough, but someone I know in their early 40’s just bought the dove dress from silk Fred and looked amazing.

you can unbutton as many buttons as you want for low cut/ high split to look more sexy 😉

I saw this dress in Zara recently. Going to try it on next week, so no idea how it comes up!

Why don’t you look in Vinted? I often find something I like in the shops then search Vinted for a complete bargain.
I have a few bits o there but posting more over the next couple of weeks
amandarini is my profile

Odd suggestion.

Not a single dress on that site would be suitable for a chilled party in a pub.

And not a single one is even vaguely fashionable.

TwentySecondsLeft · 23/02/2025 12:01

@MsWintertowne

Well each to their own.

If OP wants to wear something that looks like a nightie/something a nun would wear/something she could smuggle her cat under/something that looks like her Gran’s curtains - then I’m sure Sister Jane is bang on trend!
